A letter to my Grandma
« on: August 27, 2012, 08:31:11 AM »
My grandma is in hospice care. She's in and out of knowing what's going on. I always wanted to write a letter to tell her how special she was and how much I appreciated her. I put it off and put it off. One day I sat down wrote the letter and sent it. I know it made her happy. I would feel so much regret right now if I had never gotten around to that letter. I guess what I'm trying to say is go ahead and write the letter. Go ahead and tell the person how special they are. One day there isn't going to be an "I'll do it tomorrow."

This is so very true. If you care about someone you should tell them so. You may not get another chance. I'm glad you finally wrote to your grandmother.

That's wonderful, I'm glad you wrote the letter.  I have been very thankful to have been able to have a good conversation with my grandpa and tell him that I loved him only a day before he passed away.  My other grandpa, I didn't get the chance, but he probably wouldn't have been able to read it, he had severe dementia and didn't even recognize my grandma sometimes.  But she let him have unlimited ice cream since we all knew that his time was up, so he was a happy camper.

Good idea.  <3 I was pen-pals with one of my grandmas for years before she died (she lived on the opposite coast as me, in Florida). It was such a nice way to connect with her.

I am a true believer in this sort of thing myself. Live each day as though it is your last, and let your loved ones know that you do indeed love them and care about them. I never get off the phone to anyone I have feelings for (close friends or family) without saying I love you, others find it strange but I don't care. If I am killed on my way home, at least I know that person is aware of how I feel about them after my conversation.

A good friend of mine is the same way, she is much younger than I am and I think it is great that someone of her age is comfortable enough to do the same before hanging up. Most people are not comfortable expressing their true feelings because others make them feel insecure about those feelings, which I think is sad.

Its great that your grandma got her letter :) I am sure it really made her day! I had my mums dad in care for 13 months before he passed away, and I made an effort to get up at least twice a week to see him and spend some time talking with him, he had dimentia but knew who I was right up until the end, and I know that being there helped in some way. I used to take one of the kitties up with me to see him on a lead, they would go for a lap around the activities room to visit the other people in the home before going to visit Pop in his room, and got that used to going they would jump out of the car & walk up the hill with me to the nursing home. The staff used to joke about reporting me to the authorities for "animal abuse" because the cats were so well looked after and happy lol.

There are few things more powerfully poisonous as regret.  I'm glad that you sent that letter.  :)

your story about the letter you wrote to your Grandma reminded me of a lovely song by The Cure, which kind of hit me back when I heard it first, it's so very true. a part of it goes like this:

"Oh c'mon and and have a drink with me
Sit down and talk a while..."
"Oh I wish I could and I will!
But now I just don't have the time"
And over my shoulder as I walk away
I see you give that look goodbye
I still see that look in your eye

So dizzy Mr Busy, too much rush to talk to Billy
All the silly frilly things have to first get done
'In a minute' 'sometime soon', 'maybe next time', 'make it June'
'Until later' doesn't always come

I'm glad to hear you wrote that letter, and also that it made your Grandma so happy. there are not much things more nasty than regret or a lost chance, so don't ever let those chances go by hesitating and delaying too much!
