Styrofoam storage?
« on: August 26, 2012, 06:10:02 PM »
I'm working on sorting ponied and getting them in storage, since I currently lack display space.

The boxes I use, I can get 2 layers of G1 ponies, with something in between so the second layer can stand properly.

Right now, I'm using some light tagboard, but I'm not finding an "acid-free" notation on the label, so I'm a bit concerned about using it if the storage turns into long-term.

The candy we get at work comes packed with styrofoam between the layers, and we're allowed to take it home if we want. I have sheets ranging from 1/2" to 2" thick, and it should be a treat to cut down.

So, Styrofoam sheets between the layers - good idea or bad idea? I've no way to find out if this stuff is acid-free, and is probably use some on the top and/or bottom too.

Any thoughts? Thanks, everypony! :awake:

I don't think styrofoam would hurt them, but if you are worried about it you could line the styrofoam with acid free tissue paper :)

I've had stuff in Styrofoam containers for years and haven't had any issues.

I would go with OL1s suggestion as not all styrofoam is acid-free :)

Also make sure you use thin styrofoam and dont over load the second layer of ponies as even the lightest pressure over time can cause dents in the plastic of the ponies underneath.

All of my child hood power rangers, turtles etc are safely stored away in Styrofoam boxes.
The only issue I ever had was when we got Cleo (a stray cat that followed me home) when she got downstairs she scratched up some of the boxes with her claws..

I've had styrofoam packing peanuts react with vinyl and melt onto the legs of a doll before, so use with caution!

Oh thats a good point it is true that when plastic sweats packing peanuts can "stick"....so a good point would be to make sure whatever you use is white in colour and not coloured. However, if its a sheet of styrofoam it should hopefully be ok.

Styrofoam sounds like a great idea for padding and creating "shelves" within boxes/bins you're storing ponies in.  I would go with Oneleo1's suggestion of acid-free tissue paper if you have a climate that is prone to humidity, though!  Of course, throwing a silica packet inside wouldn't hurt either...
