Happy Tails Mechanisms

Going through my ponies for sorting and insurance purposes (never know when fire may strike, though we all hope & pray it never will), and I came across a Tall Tails whose mechanism isn't terribly enthusiastic.

Which is the say, it'll flip the the left, but only if you squeeze really hard.

Well, her head is loose - looks almost like it was never glued, really - so I took it off and found that the main part of the mechanism is plastic, except for this thin, u-shaped piece of metal in the front, just behind the shoulders.

Which is now totally rusted.

Now it is attatched to the rest of the mechanism with four plastic knobs that go through holes in the metal piece, but if i can get it out, I might be able to replace it, right?

Before I try, has anyone ever attempted this before? If so, how did it go? Thanks!
