Adult dyslexia or some kind of learning disability?
« on: August 10, 2012, 06:35:24 PM »
I was wondering for a few years, even during school, about if I had some kind of learning difficulty. I could read a book but I won't really retain the story that I've read, I could tell time properly or at all until I was 15 and was forced to learn, because of high school. And when I'm given instructions- I usually get the wrong end of the stick and do that wrong thing.

At first I thought it was my parents fault and they way they talk to me, My mothers english is great, but she'll tell you things in a round about way. Like she'll say fridge instead of freezer, shower instead of toilet and generally mix things up. But then my father will say it the right way and I'll second guess him, and to this day I get confused about orders given to me. I will over think or just simply, not understand it.

Most of the time when learning as well, I just don't get things and it feels like there's a big block in my head, unless it's explained to me in three different ways or I have to ask a buttload of questions. Which annoys the heck out of everyone, especially my employers and in the retail industry. Being a time waster is a good way to get your butt kicked.

So I was wondering, if I do have something- is it worth getting checked out? If I do there's not much that can be done really, since I'm an adult and I can't use it to make employers be more patient with me or even to hire me.  I dunno. Advice? I was going to put this in the WYP section but, it's more of a curiosity than a problem I guess? haha.

I plan too, but what I'm asking is. What can they do for adults?

Maybe once your doctor gives you more insights, check out some support groups for adults with dyslexia?

Tons of stuff can be done for adults. Knowing that you have an issue can give you closure and ease anxiety, for one thing. Your thinking goes from "I'm an idiot, why can't I get this, I'm a failure," to "I have X, it's not my fault I'm this way, I can work on how to cope."

I was confused by a lot of my seemingly random things that I couldn't do until I found out that I was diagnosed with Asperger's when I was younger, and my mom refused to accept it and didn't get me help.

If you do have a learning disability, you can talk to a counselor and learn ways that you can interact with the world and handle information. You've been forced to learn the same way as everyone else, and now you can learn the best ways for you to learn.

If you have/plan on having kids and the issues are genetic, then you'll know what to look out for and how to help your own kids out, too.

If you have the money and means to do so, do go to your general practioner and get the recommendations for specialists in your area.

I'm not sure what it's like in the US but talk to your doctor, and if they say "nothing can be done" (which is a lie), tell them you need information on support groups then, or something akin.

If you have enough money, I think there are courses you can take which are there to help older people (18+) who have problems with reading, writing, maths, etc. even if they're only slight problems. It's worth trying to get help/advice for, learning disabilities aren't fun to have, and knowing you have them can often help in dealing with them, because then you can not only find information, but try to break that "barrier" holding you back, and it feels really nice when you improve stuff which dyslexia holds back.

I've had diagnosed dyslexia my whole life, and I can't even grammar xD I read at the pace of a snail and have problems with my attention span when it comes to doing set tasks, I also can't write very well or structure my writing. I have terrible problems with numbers and mathematics- and up until about three years ago I couldn't spell a lot of words very well.
