What tutorials would you like to see?
« on: August 09, 2012, 07:13:57 AM »
Hi loves!

I have noticed a lot of the same questions coming up, and I was wondering if we might be able to create a few tutorials to help out.

If I have time, I will try to work on a few, but any other members are encouraged to share their wealth of knowledge if they have time.  We could add them to the tutorials sticky.  (If you know of a good tutorial not in the stickied thread, please share :) )

So far:

~Purchasing an airbrush, maintaining an airbrush, airbrushing
~Dyeing hair (My Little Customs ~stickied in tutorials)
~Removing tail off McD Ponies (I have one in progress)
~Photographing ponies~Sealing ponies (Maniah)
~Sculpting hair
~Detail sculpting (feathers)
~Basic painting techniques (we have several painting tutorials amidst the "how to make a custom pony stickied threads)
~Shipping FAQ (there is a shipping tutorial on one of the stickied threads, can't recall at the moment)
~Removing heads from all gens (AnimeAmy has a sticky on G4 head removal)
~Sculpted clothing
~More reposes (the current repose tutorial works for any pose really)

Any other suggestions?

Creating alternate hairlines pops up often, and I have been working on a collection for this, but I could always use more images donated to it.  http://custompony.tumblr.com/HairTemplates

I keep a collection of tutorials that I find useful, available in a How To section on my tumblr http://custompony.tumblr.com/Tutorials And I think a lot of them may have stickied links here, but I'm not sure.

Aside from that, I think a tutorial going over the choices for sealing ponies would be beneficial. How to do it, why to choose one product over another. How to fix sticky ponies. This is something that I see come up a lot.

How to sculpt corsets, shoes/boots and WINGS...or just anything period. Lol, or maybe it's just user error for me since my clay always seems...difficult to use. It's either WAY too soft or WAY too hard. >.>

Any sculpting tutorials I find aren't specific and detailed. I know how to put the wing base together, I just don't really know how to go about the feathers. Hope that makes sense.

Wings I can probably do... but clothing I've not tried... How about a tutorial on sculpting hair?

I'd love to see a few tutorials on different eye styles!  Eyes are often a weak point in many artists and I always have to redo mine a few times.  Also would love to see a basic painting tutorial on how to get crisp lines, color blending/shading, and maybe realistic painting?  I'm not an artist, so this is what I struggle with most.  Real time tutorials would be awesome if anyone is brave enough to deal with video.  Pictures just don't get the point across sometimes.

Great ideas!

We have a pretty awesome eye tutorial with LLL's.  Are you thinking of a compliation of eye styles as opposed to a tutorial?

A painting tutorial might be helpful, though a lot of it is just buckets of practice.  I'll add it to the list if someone feels like maybe tackling it. :)

This such a wonderful thread

Regarding wings again: how to make them removable for shipping. I'm sure there's a tutorial out there somewhere, and I've seen various wing tutorials for how to actually make the wings themselves, but I'd love to know how people make them removable so shipping is easier, but still secure. The wing type doesn't really matter, like sculpted vs. acetate, since the method should translate to either.

I can't even express how excited I am for these tutorials!!  Everyone's had such great ideas and there are so many talented customizers out there!  I think it's great that everyone within the customizing community is so willing to lend their knowledge and expertise to other customerizers.  This thread was a great idea CSA!

I'd love to see more tutorials on reposing ponies... I loved your one on the rearing pose, but I'd love to see tutorials on some other poses too

I have a dyeing hair guide on my FB page you can check it out here, but would be awesome if we could get a link to it on here. I can add it to my tutorial page on my site if that's easier.

I have been asked to make tutorials for sculpted ruffles and for gem eyes.. They are on my list of things to do.. but it may be months yet before I can do them.

Oh, BB!! I completely agree! I want to make sculpted wings sometime soon, but I'd be afraid of them breaking during shipment.

yes more of a compilation i suppose.  I have used LLL's and a few other tutorials, just like seeing different techniques really.  Everyone does things so differently, it's nice to see how other poepl do things.
