Types of hair?
« on: August 07, 2012, 08:44:55 PM »
I don't know if this is the right place to post this, but I am going to be doing some custom work [not on ponies, but I know that you guys know best  :) ] and I needed to know the difference between nylon and saran hair. What is it that my G4 ponies have? What kind of hair do dolls [like Monster High] have? Are the both easily style-able? I'm kinda lost......

G4 ponies have nylon hair, most Monster High dolls have saran although a few use kanekalon.

Nylon hair- used in my little ponies, It is heat resistant and holds a curl very well. You can curl it very easily- boil perms work wonderfully on it. It's strong- doesn't break easily.

Saran hair- often used on Monster High dolls, a heavier hair with a silkier feel (often used on barbie dolls too). It can hold a curl nicely by using a hot boil perm (and it makes nice waves too if you braid it).

Other types of hair that can be used- kanekalon, polypropylene, acetate, mohair, felt, yarn ;) If you have any questions about those, feel free to ask! :)

enchantress is spot on. ;) For me the choice is between nylon and saran - saran being my favorite. Most customizers prefer nylon and it's what Hasbro uses for factory ponies.

Agreed, but Saran is also great for long straight styles as some times it can be more difficult to style than Nylon

Saran never wants to style for me :( It barely seems to be affected when I apply the boiling water. Maybe I make the hair too thick?

I would try using smaller sections to boil and leave it in for a little bit longer-

here is Retro Dolls US thermal saran after a boil perm-

I agree with lisey_baby that saran is excellent for straight styles (Kanekalon is another one that's awesome for super straight hair), but with a little time and patience, you can get it to curl nicely :)
