Customizing the CAM dolls, some questions?
« on: July 24, 2012, 05:33:49 PM »
Ok So I really want to do some work on my CAM cat girl soooo

1. How do you make the wigs out of the faux fur? Is there tutorial out there?

2. What paint do you use on them?

3. are they like ponies and you have to seal them? If so do you use testors on them or what?

MyFroggyStuff has an awesome tutorial: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gUlFuKuA2N4 (For 1.)

I know that you have to seal them, but I don't know much more than that.
I took a break from the Arena from a couple months due to school and other things in my life. But I'm back now!

Acrylics are good for the face and I've heard people use pastels for blushing.  I also saw a step by step using colored pencils.  I would research that a bit though, because you can't use just any old color pencils.  They have to be a certain type, I think.

The bodies are harder to paint, from what I understand.  I hear it's hard to find a paint that wants to 'stick' to the plastic of the bodies, and even if you do, the paint rubs off at the joints:(  Even if you seal the paint.

All of this info is stuff I've heard over the years.  I've never bothered to paint a body.  It sounds like more irritation than anything else, and I probably wouldn't be satisfied with the results.  If I was gonna customize a doll, I'd pay someone to do it for me, or I'd buy a custom torso in the colored resin I was going for so there was no flake off paint.

Sorry I didn't help very much:(

I've painted CAM bodies with acrylics, and it worked just fine. I did layers of thin coats, just like a full-body repaint on a pony. It does chip, though, but I didn't seal it, so that's to be expected.

I've been wondering some of these things too since I've been toying with the idea of getting a dragon CAM kit. (I finally think all the really cool pics I've been seeing lately have made me break down and want one)

I've used modge podge to seal my custom ponies will that work with these dolls too?

I tried my hand at it and will share my frustrations and what I learned!!

DO NOT USE ACITONE ON THE BODY PARTS!!! Seriously this is the most important thing. It WILL melt the plastic and you will have the biggest mess on your hands. Alcohol is about the strongest abrhesive you can use and it works fairly well.

As for painting the bodies. I managed this one pretty well with my Siberian husky. I had to let the paint cure for about two weeks with the sealer over it. I think I used three or four coats of testers. I creatively avoided painting the joints.  Face works out like any MLP.

Testors dullcoat works well with the face and the body. Doesn't crack if the head gets smooshed trying to pop it back on.

Hope this helps. Also when making fur wigs just know it is a HUGE mess!
