Twinkle eyes and princess gems?
« on: July 18, 2012, 05:54:22 AM »
My childhood pony days were more or less over in 1988. I remember when the princess ponies came and thought they looked a bit weird because they didn't have a proper symbol, I never got one. I don't think I ever saw a twinkle eyed pony in the store and the BNG princesses came out after I had quit playing with ponies. What I'm trying to say is that I've never seen these ponies mint. I now own one TE, two princess ponies (Royal Blue and Sparkle) and two BNG princess ponies (Skylark and Brilliant Bloom).

I can see the remains of the coating on the eye of the TE pony and I know that they're supposed to have it but there's also some remains on Princess Sparkle's symbol and I think there's some on Princess Brilliant Bloom's gem on her forehead. There's absolutely nothing on Princess Royal Blue as well as on Skylark.

Question: Did the gems on the princess ponies, both the first kind and the BNG ones, have shimmering coating?

The regular princesses definitely had the shimmery coating and I am fairly sure the Brush 'n Grow princesses also had it.

Oh. This pony collecting business isn't so easy. You always figure out something you should have thought of before buying. Thanks for the info.

I have seen people say in the past their childhood ponies dont/didnt have the iridescent coating but I believe with this set the truth is that the coating chips/rubs off very easily. I have had all 4 MIB [2 of them twice] over the years - 2 in Euro boxes and 4 in US boxes from what I could see they all had something coating the gems but maybe that was just those I had!

Interesting. I believe the BNG princesses had the coating. I tried taking a picture of mine. You can sort of see it. It makes more sense if they had coating with that colour dot inside the gem. Must have looked better with a shimmering coating on top.

The left photo shows the gem on the side with no coating left.
The right photo shows the gem on the side that has some coating.

Edit: Oh, I had a closer look at my Princess Royal Blue. She has some coating left but it's not much.
