Drawing on ponies with pencils?
« on: July 11, 2012, 01:52:58 AM »
I have never customised a pony or other toy before, but I rcently bought one of the blank, G3 ponies from the Hasbro website. I have an image in my mind of what I want to do, and it involves a very soft and sketchy look. My question is:

Is it possible to draw on these ponies with coloured pencil? And, if so, what kind of pencil specifically and what could I have to do with it (ie. would I have to seal it with a particular product or something) to stop the pencil from fading?

I hope you guys can help...I'm completely at a loss here!

Ive never used colour, but I have drawn designs on ponies before painting them. With drawing pencils it seems alot easier to drawn onto a layer of paint than it did directly onto them

I do it for pretty much every pony I do, draw on it with pencil before painting.
Like WaePonies said, it's easier to draw it onto a layer of paint, because the plastic of the ponies cause the pencils to stab into the plastic in order to draw on it.
Also, the pencil rubs away after a while. Try regularly sharpening the pencil so that you're leaving more graphite residue as you draw on it, and the pencil will be easier to see. The hard part of drawing on pony with pencil is that when it's not a flat-ish surface, the pencil slips and is hard to control. but good luck! :)

this was something I was curious about. I know I drew on ponies after adding paint on the plastic but I had an idea for a custom that required no paint XD
My DeviantArt, why not drop by and take a look!

Thanks for the comments...sounds like it could be a bit of a challenge to make this work, but I'll keep all your advice in mind.

butterflybuttons, do you have any photos of ponies you've drawn on with watercolour pencils that I could see?
