Bunny Hop Restoration
« on: July 09, 2012, 03:48:06 AM »
Hello all

I am currently in the process of sunfading my Bunny Hop who was covered in pink highlighter. I also have a couple of other questions about restoring her to her former glory. Firstly - she used to have pink hair. Now it's white (with the purple stripe in the mane). Can I dye it? Or should I just leave it be? I don't feel strongly enough about it to rehair, but I just saw a picture of one with pink hair and now I feel sorry for her.

Secondly, I need to make her a new hat and bunny as she is missing both. Someone mentioned a tutorial for this? I haven't been able to find one, so if anyone knows of one & can point me in the right direction I would be grateful. Or if anyone who has done this before has any tips? I have some sculpey.

I hope this is in the right section, not sure if it should be here or customs?

Thanks!

Good question. Here's some pics after I restored my gals.
Yes, rose color rit dye will be great to restore her pink hair shouldn't do anything to purple.
Get ready to work w/sculpey!

Aww they're lovely! What did you attach the hat to the body with? How did you make the rabbit? Many questions!

I had a quick look for rit dye on eBay as I'm in the UK, can you dip dye the hair successfully?

I seem to be creating a little collection of Bunny Hops now as I feel sorry for them without their hats and bunnies.

This topic comes up often lemme check to see if I can find a good previous thread for you...
http://www.mlparena.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=269226.html-scroll down, blackcurtains did an awesome restore and has some great close ups of a replacement pocket/charm and steps she took. Even if you google for some original pics that can help out. I choose to do a thin rabbit, thought it would be different...

Hat is attached to the body with that sticky putty stuff that you use to hang stuff on the walls-lol descriptive, I know. It's not really a permenent attachment.

I believe it is still called RIT dye in your neck of the woods... if not hopefully someone will chime in with what it's called. As I previously mentioned, rose color matches best.
Lovely directions from BridgetsMum for this process:

It is indeed called RIT dye. You can find it with the laundry detergent at Wal-Mart.

Good luck with your restoration!

OH yes, I was just going to offer this restore I saw on DA, but it seems it's already been posted. She really did an amazing job.

That restore challenge was also an awesome idea. I wish more of the pics from that old thread worked. I loved seeing the pics.

Lovely, that's very helpful thank you :)

I managed to get some rit dye off ebay (not sure where they sell it here & ebay is my friend since mostly I'm in work) I got the powdered stuff which I assume will still work ok. We'll see!

You can get Rit in the UK - Amazon is a good source for it but I also have tracked it down in my local HobbyCraft and in my local craft shop :)

Restores are always fun projects ^^

As for mine, the hat was harder to make than the bunny actually. The bunny took longer though as I don't normally do such small things. To attach the hat I took a piece of wire mesh, made the basic shape and bent the edges inward to sit flush against her body. Then I took small wires, poked them through the original holes and knotted them on the inside of where the hat would be. Then it was just a matter of sculpting over the mesh.
The most difficult part was making it large enough to fit the bunny, but not so big that it looked gaudy and for a while I kept making it too square. It was trial and error really but that's what's nice about using Sculpey - you can just peel it off and start over.

Here are the reference pictures I used when making the bunny. Credit for them goes to our lovely admin, SDS.
