Restoration techniques-straightening tinsel hair
« on: July 04, 2012, 11:06:41 AM »
Hi guys. Just want to discuss tinsel straightening techniques.

I have been straightening tinsel hair using just a few simple items:
Dryer sheet
Cold water
Hair Straightener

First wet your ponies' hair and make sure it is combed. Wet the dryer sheet, and run through the ponies' mane and tail a few times. Take a Straightener set on LOW and run through the ponies' hair. The technique for me is to hold the hair straight and firm when running the iron through. Also I try to decrease the pressure I am applying to the flat iron towards the end of the hair to keep it from curling, also held to go slow, but not too slow to keep tinsel from curling. Next rinse the ponies hair in cold water to get off the dryer sheet residue.

I've used this technique too, and it works quite well.

Just take extra care to get all the dryer sheet residue off the first time. It can leave an unpleasant film on the hair if it is allowed to dry that way. :)

Ooh thank you for posting this! I have a few G3s and one pesky G4 that have crazy tinsel going on. Will definitely refer to your guide in the future. :)

huh, I didn't know about this. I thought using a straightener/flat iron was bad for tinsel. Maybe I should add this to my list of pony cleaning products? http://mlparena.com/mlp/index.php/topic,300933.0.html

You have to set it on low. I had it on the lowest spot on my Straightener, otherwise you could melt the tinsel.

Yes, I know, isn't the setting always supposed to be on low for pony hair? And yet I still always heard it melted or curled tinsel. I'm glad to see this works, so I assume it's just technique (or just how low the lowest setting is).

Well, dryer sheets are just plastic, so that makes sense, to re-heat plastic enough to bond it to another type of plastic.  :)  Looks good on those G3s so far!  Have you tried it on a G1 - are the results the same?

No, not on a g1 as of yet. I do not have a tinsel haired g1.

Oh, I am not running the iron over the dryer sheet. It is the film on the dryer sheet being wiped onto the pony's hair. I think it helps keep the tinsel from sticking together and gives it some stiffness.

What fantastic results!

Over the years I have seen and heard a few too many tinsel melting stories :) but its nice to see that some people can have luck with using good old straightners straight on to tinsel!

Oh cool!  How did Candy Apple's hair look after it dried?  Did the iridescent tinsel curl up at all once it was actually dry?  I know that with opaque tinsels you can just defrizz them like any other pony hair, but the iridescent stuff is totally different.

Actually only a couple strands in her mane curled, other than that looks great. :)
