Twinkle Eyes - What is under the gem?

Hey all Twinkle Eye lovers, anyone know what is underneath the gem on a twinkle eye pony? Not that anyone would want to deface a TE, but does anyone know?

Way back when when I was little I thought TE's were kind of strange and wondered if they had normal eyes underneath the gems, or just indents. Now I think they are beautiful!

As far as I'm aware the gems are kind of plug-shaped, and the plug sits in some plastic seating inside the eye socket. I'm sure there's a thread somewhere with a piccy but I can't find it...

I just opened up and checked all of my twinkle eyes, and there's nothing underneath the gem. Its just a sort of pocket thing where the eyes are with the gems glued in place.

Yep, that's exactly what it is - on a photo it looks like a small round patch that's the color of the pony's body. I believe the My Little Pony Preservation Project site should have some pictures showing TE ponies without their gem eyes.
