R.I.P Lonesome George

Staff at the Galapagos National Park in Ecuador say Lonesome George, a giant tortoise believed to be the last of its subspecies, has died.

Scientists estimate he was about 100 years old.

Park officials said they would carry out a post-mortem to determine the cause of his death.

With no offspring and no known individuals from his subspecies left, Lonesome George became known as the rarest creature in the world.

For decades, environmentalists unsuccessfully tried to get the Pinta Island tortoise to reproduce with females from a similar subspecies on the Galapagos Islands.

Actually they go extinct almost everyday.

That is too bad, they where not able to get him to breed.  Kind of surprised they did not try cloning since it seems to popular in some areas of the world.

There have been more than that subspecies of turtle that have gone extinct in your lifetime (assuming you're between 10-30)

This is terribly sad :(

actually dozens of species go extinct every day :/
species becoming extinct is a part of natural selection, I know, but still I'm still angry because the pace they disappear at recently is mainly because of us humans (which is, nature, again, but still).

may you rest in peace, George!

Awwww no :c poor George..

It's so sad to hear about species going and facing extinction.

I hope the poor guy wasn't lonely, being the last of his kind.. He's had such a long life, now will be like extra-long sleep for him.
Fight like a girl..

the problem with cloning is that a clone is just a genetic copy there is no diversity in that line and it increases the chance of the clones all dieing due to a single defect or virus.  On top of that cloning reptiles usually only has a survival rate of one clone per 400 embryos started.
