I don't know about other countries, but here in the Netherlands we can just buy the mermaid ponies in blind bags 
But don't know if they are still available.in other countries or if you can consider them rare.

Those see through mermaids are quite sought after, I could never find them here in england and I don't think the US had them either

Nah, I don't think so. I have that Fluttershy along with tons of other Ponyvilles, and I'm pretty sure she was very easy to find when she was released.  I remember I liked the molded hair better than the regular haired ponies. And the Ponyvilles are g3, not 3.5. But idk about the mermaid, I saw a bunch of mermaid sets on clearence at target a few years ago and I was like WTH. But I think they were released as Blind bags too.

I've seen G3.5 mermaids last year in Austria. The furry ponies are from the rival brand FILLY, which is insanely huge in central Europe. They pretty much took over the equine toy section while Hasbro snoozed.

The mermaids are popular but I wouldnt say any of them are rare or anything - you can still sometimes encounter some of these new to buy in stores as others have mentioned here.

As far as I know it depends on where you ask about the Mermaids... I've never seen them in the USA so some people here might look for them

the blindbag mermaids never came to the US, but I saw TONS of them the last time I was in the Netherlands. heh.

The other two ponyvilles aren't rare.

I don't think they're rare... I've seen a couple in a few smaller toy stores in my hometown, and I've even seen a playset for them. But, of course, I'm talking about Europe here.
