dyeing nylon hair
« on: May 21, 2012, 05:39:40 PM »
I've never had issue with dyeing hair...until now.   :argh:   I'm trying to dye the ends black and it will not take!  I'm using the powder Rit.  Anyone else with more experience than I with dyeing that could give me some tips on getting it to take?  TIA!!!

Is the water at a rolling boil?

Did you add a dash of vinegar? Salt?

I did the vinegar and salt, but only used really hot water.  I'll try boiling it, thanks!!

If it doesn't work with boiling, then I am not sure what else to suggest other than time. Good luck!

I boiled it and it worked like a charm.  Her hair looks great.  Thanks!  I've only really done tints before and haven't tried to get super dark tones so I never needed to boil to get the results that I wanted.  Custom +1 to awesome hair with scalded wrist bonus! ...and now back to our regularly scheduled custom.

:P  It was my own stupid fault.  I decided to add more salt after it was boiling and it exploded on me.  It was interesting seeing the dye explode though!  I am constantly injuring myself.  ::adds scaled wrist to list::

 Best of luck to you!

I saw that!  That's how I've done it in the past, but that black did not want to take even after letting it sit there for like 20 minutes.  I ended up using the whole packet of dye and dipping it while it was actually boiling.  The ends are definitely black now!  lol  I kinda felt like I needed a lab coat and crazy hair while doing it.  I wonder how many other people who do customs get that mad scientist feeling at times?

LOL sure!  I kinda feel like that too sometimes.  It's like you know you're going to eventually do something really cool or beautiful, but sorry <insert pony name here> you're gonna have to go buh-bye first!  ::waves::  /tear

Hehe!!  For awhile there I had this block of florist foam with sticks stuck on it that I would put bodies on while it was drying...definitely got some weird looks from that one!  I secretly enjoy it immensely.  :frolic:
