Help Sundance and Firefly!
« on: May 14, 2012, 11:30:33 AM »
I have a Sundance and Firefly who were both filled with black mildew when I bought them.  I've tried soaking them in hot water and using a toothbrush to scrub out as much as possible, but there are areas I can't reach. Any advise on what I can do to help these two girls get prettied up in time for my pony meet on Saturday? I want them to have a good shot at going home with someone.  :yikes: Any advice is welcome and thanks for reading!

Here are pics of what I'm trying to get out:

I got a really great bottle brush set at Target for like $3 that had 4 brushes of different sizes, more than small enough to get into any pony leg or behind. I've also let them soak and then used good ole pipe cleaners to wipe the grime away. :)

You should soak them in some boiling water and a cleaning product overnight.  :)

Denture cleaner!  Break a tablet into four pieces, stick them down in the legs, and fill the pony with warm water.  Works wonders. It's also fun to watch the fizzy stuff come pouring out the neck and tail hole!  :silly:

Ooo, that sounds fun Eskara! I actually recnetly had the same problem only it was mildew + rust (yay :P ). It took a lot of patience, toothpaste and manoeuvring to get everywhere. In the absence of anything but usual bathroom tools, i used a toothbrush and some q tips. They are not 100% clean but very close to it :)

I use a bottle brush and alot of scrubbing. If I still can't get the mold out I soak the pony with a 1:1 solution in bleach. that works for me. I also sometimes use 100% acetone and with a qtip get rid of any rust inside the pony.

I had a pony like that that I soaked in Oxy-Clean -- it worked perfectly! :)

I also had a pony with solid black mildew inside. To get down at the bottom of the legs I actually scratched at it with a flathead screwdriver. Made me feel like a farrier LOL.

And then, to get all the corners at the bottom of the feet, I soaked the pony in hotwater and then shoved cotton balls in there and just pushed them around to soak up all the gunk at the bottom. it's a bit of work, but I didn't want to spend the money on buying denture cleaner. They usually come in bulk and I just wanted one packet so... no thanks to that. I'll just clean them with what I have lying around :)

I'd soak them and then use a q-tip to clean out their legs.

Ouch... not a pretty sight I admit. I'm pretty new to cleaning and restoring ponies, but I've had similar problem with a few of my own ponies, with which I dealt just fine, so I can give a few of my own tips.

I'd use gall soap (preferably Dr. Beckmann's gall soap for stain removal): get some soap on a tootbrush and start cleaning the pony interior with it. Gall soap works wonderfully and is perfectly safe to use it: it doesn't cause any harm to the plastic, hair or paint. Plus, it gives ponies a nice scent(particularly the Dr Beckmann one). ;) :)

After that I'd give both of them a nice OxiClean/Vanish Oxi Action bath.
