g1 charm reproductions...ok to sell? pic
« on: April 29, 2012, 06:49:48 PM »
I wanted to see what peoples opinion is on making and possibly selling reproductions of the first   g1 charms, the ones in the collectors pose. I made a mould from one side of the old charm from sculpy and am gonna  try baking it  too see how it turns out.

So would it be ok to possibly try to sell such a thing? I'm not skilled enough to make plushies or full customs for commission but if I could get a little extra cash from something it would  help me right now. If is it ok then how much would you  be willing to pay for one?

If it turns out alright I'll post a pic  later of  the  1/2 charmy.

Edit! a pic of the  flat sided charm next to the original.  I didn't have any eye hooks  so  I had to compromise with  something ti attach a chain to. Since this is my test it'll be mine anyway. Tomorrow I'll try a double sided charm

Now I have to decide who to paint her as........

It should be ok to sell them :) I prefer my things to be double-sided personally, but depending on the price I'm sure they'll sell. People would probably buy blank/unpainted ones too so they could customize the charm themselves :awake:

I don't know too much about laws on stuff like that...however I think it's a great idea. I love those charms...have one myself but I would never wear it for fear of it getting damaged or lost. So it'd be really cool to have a reproduction of one! Even if it had a flat back...that might actually make it more wearable...

If the quality was good I'd probably pay like $8...but I don't know if that's fair. It may be worth a bit more than that with the money and effort you'd have to put into it.

People have made molds of petite ponies and have done ok with them :) And like PinkRosedust, I'd love to be able to use my own charms (maybe hang one from my rear view mirror in my car) but would hate for the sun to fade it since I'll have a hard time finding another :yikes: I'd love a replica to use in its place. I'd definitely pay $10-12 or so for a nicely painted, double-sided charm.

I think you should be good so long as you make it perfectly clear that they aren't originals. Perhaps maybe initialing and dating the flat back would be a good way to protect it from people who might turn around and resell it as authentic.

I think it's a great idea! I saw a person on eBay making their own Petites and putting them inside homemade soap! I think things like this can be excellent sources of creativity and like you said, a good way to make a little bit of money.

I agree with what others have said - as long as you designate that it's a reproduction somewhere on the charm, then I think you're good.  :)

I'd pay about $10+ for one, personally.  I'd love to see how they look completed.  :)

As others have said...as long as you note that its a reproduction then I would think considering the number of items produced in the last 20 odd years on the back of Hasbro artwork/moulds...you should be fine.

I think Glacia is right as well - you ll probably get a lot of interest in blank ones for people to customise for themselves...

Good luck..cant wait to see the double sided ones.

I think it's a great idea! As long as you take the precautions everyone else has suggested - they're great ideas :)

So cool! For flat backed ones you could use glue and put pins on the back to make badges, or is it possible to set hooks in before they've dried to make earrings?

There's lots of people who make jewelry, I'd bet  they would be popular. It would be cool to have a pair made into earrings

Those are cute! I'd hang one from my rearview mirror, like somebody else said.  They look well-done!
