Black mold/discoloration...??
« on: April 22, 2012, 06:36:40 PM »
I'm working on restoring Lil Pocket... She had a rusty washer, the rust washed out, but her insides are still black... Even the flab around her neck seam is black!

Baking soda toothpaste did nothing
Antibacterial soap did nothing
bleach/water sitting for a few days did nothing

I'm at a loss... I thought I had a pretty good grasp on getting rid of pretty much every kind of gross stuff inside a pony but this baffles me.

If it's mold, it's really in there, but isn't visible on the outside yet.

Any ideas how to tackle this one??

I've only used H202 on white-bodied ponies... Think that may work?

I would try oxyclean and see if that helps. If not, I would pour some bleach in her, let it sit for a while to kill whatever may be left of the mold, and rinse her out well. Since it's on the inside, it should be ok and not affect the way she displays ;)

Yikes... I'd say fill her up with some watered down bleach just to be safe. :/

Yuck! I had a peachy like that. I boiled her with oxy clean and then whilst she was still warm (but not hot) I got an old toothbrush and scrubbed her insides with bleach cleaner (like what is used as bathroom cleaners) rinsed and repeated until it was gone.

Yes, sounds like you need oxy or bleech or even acetone to shift the remainder!

I would suggest a good internal soak in one of the above [you should dilute with some really warm water as well to help loosen anything up] and than as butterflybuttons says, elbow grease, determination and a toothbrush! Rinse and repeat until gone...I sound like a detergent advert!

Thanks for the ideas!!  :)

I'll see if I can get pics within the next day or so. (It's quite sad as my $300 Nikon cannot focus clearly for close-ups, I'll see what I can do.)

I do have some nail polish remover so I'll give that a try.

If that doesn't work I'll try a stronger bleach soak.

We'll see how it goes...

Could it be that any mold is dead, but the plastic is just stained?

That's my guess Elisto. I scrubbed and scrubbed and it's still there, even used a bottle brush and those are really good at getting grime off!
I'm sure I've killed any living mold with the water/bleach inside for a few days...

yup, I've had that kind of discoloration before. On the little neck flap it's probably stained, but the inside you might be able to get with some good hard scrubbing - bottle brushes are great for this!
