Nylon or Saran?
« on: April 21, 2012, 08:34:37 AM »
I've only ever used saran hair to reroot a custom once and the hair was lovely when it was finished but it was a nightmare to reroot! Back then though, I was using the wire method and I've upgraded to using the rehair tool now.

I have purchased another hank of saran and I'm going to try it again with the tool to see if it's any better but it just got me thinking, what everyone elses favourite kind of hair was?

And if anyone else ever had that issue with saran using the wire method or if it was just me?

I've never used the wire method, but I've used both nylon and saran.

Saran is very soft, but it's also pretty greasy. I've heard that the grease can be removed with some washing, which I've never tried because I'm an idiot. It's still really nice, though. I haven't used it much, but my experience wasn't bad.

Nylon isn't greasy, and it's very shiny. It has more of a plastic feel to it, and it's not as soft as saran. Nylon is honestly my favorite kind of hair to use.

I've worked with both with a homemade reroot tool. But this was my first time working with Saran hair. To me Saran doesn't separate as easy as the nylon does, but it could have been because I was working with a blend. I have one other pony I'm going to use Saran for so I'll get a little more experience with it

I really like both kinds of hair. Saran hair looks gorgeous if you want straight styling, maybe with some pin buns. Nylon is bet if you want to curl the hair.

My general rule of thumb is the same as ZarineBashire's:

straight sleek style: Saran

bouncy, curling, styling, going for repro MLP: Nylon

I have to say though, I was a DIE HARD saran fan until nylon came along, now nylon is my hair of choice :D  One tip re: nylon - make sure it is Dollyhair nylon (as sold by dollyhair or mylittlecustoms) as it is soft and lovely - other nylons on the market are a thicker denier and don't sit as nicely - restoredoll for example, the nylon is nice but misses that little bit of je ne sais quoi ..... its really hard to explain! LOL

If you try DH nylon against other nylons you will know what I mean lol

I follow the same rule as Zarine and piper. ;)

I tend to leave most of my customs with straight hair so I prefer saran but unfortunately the color selection isn't as broad as with nylon. For this reason alone more of my customs are rehaired with nylon but if I could I would use saran more often. ;)

totally agree with this...saran lays different. I don't find it harder to work with, but it doesn't style as well

I agree with piper, I personally prefer to work with Nylon but saran is great for straight hair styles.
