G1 Windy...Pink streak Vs Red Streak...

Hey everyone


I was wondering about G1 Windy, There is a version with a red streak and also with a pink streak in her mane and tail...

So why the difference? Is one version a later release or euro version?

Do you mean the "hot pink" verses "dark pink"? That I can help with but if its an actual red stripe on a HK pony I dont have a clue...havent seen one with a red stripe before! That would be cool...do you have pics?

It is so weird how we all describe colours differently, itsnt it?

I am going to "assume" your red pink is my hot pink...lol

If that is the case then the red pink/hot pink is the pony which came on the UK portrait orientation backcard...they were a UK release of the first edition Rainbow ponies...the dark pink is the pony which came on the landscape orientation backcard which was released US and elsewhere in the world.

In the US, you can easily find Year 2 Rainbow Ponies w/ either a more reddish red streak (a more "fruity" color if that makes sense) or a more darkish pink streak.  The colors are similar but nevertheless easy to tell apart.  I believe this is true for all six ponies, so I don't believe it's a store release/MO issue (since not all of them went on to become MOs) or a Year 2/Year 3 issue (since not all went on to Year 3).

I actually have two Moonstones in front of me right now w/ different color red streaks.  There is no difference between them at all except the one w/ the more pinkish streak's hairline is higher.  The one w/ the reddish streak has mane plugs that come down to the horn.  Also, the one with the more pinkish streak is *slightly* more robin's egg blue than powder blue.

My guess is that b/c the Rainbow Ponies were insanely popular, there were just lots and lots of them made, and at some point Hasbro changed the type of hair they were using for the red streak.

Here is a pic of my Moonstones for color comparison; the one w/ the more pinkish streak is to the left (PS--I will be putting both of these beauties up for sale soon!).

Thats odd - I have only ever seen the darker/hotter/fruitier [lol whatever colour we are going with here] on the UK cards...do you have examples of this colour on the landscape cards that would be cool?

Maybe its just that the UK portrait ones only got the darker/hotter/fruitier coloured ones but the landscape cards got both?

I am sure there was a thread talking about this over on the old Arena...I ll need to see if I can find it...

Edit: ok cancel all speculation as even on the old thread no one got to the bottom of it...other than finding more irregularities...and the fact that there seems to have simply been 2 releases with no known pattern lol! Dont you just love G1 ponies - there is never a simple answer...I must have been remembering completely wrong...

I'm interested to see if anyone else has an opinion--I'm just guessing based on what I've seen.  If it helps, I can say that both of these Moonstones came from US non-collectors who were presumably selling ponies they either were clearing out of their house or found at a garage sale.  Both were a hot mess when I got them but cleaned up very well!

I *suspect* that the pinker version is slightly earlier b/c I believe the receding hairline is an issue Hasbro corrected during the Year 2 releases.

I on the other hand think the duller shade red was first. If you look at this commercial you can see they appear to have the duller shade of red.

What is annoying me is I am sure I have heard/read the reference to the portrait/landscape cards...but having read that old topic I think I must simply be imagining it...

Thanks for posting the commercial link Yum-Yum!  The streak does appear to be the dull red in the commercial.  And the plot thickens . . . the receding hair lines on the unicorns are there at 0:10!

Thanks for posting the link to the old thread hathorcat.  I cannot believe I have never seen that UK rainbow pony backcard before!  Thats something for my wish list...
The darker steak is indeed mommy apple delight pink as pointed out by pkw...
I personally favour the hot pink : )  I just love the rainbow ponies and have a serious Moonstone crush right now

Think I have both versions for all the set apart from Skydancer, is it me or does she not pop up that often with a hot pink streak?

Oh and I just realised that the French and Italian rainbow ponies were also made with two different coloured streaks

Ahhh so I guess it makes sense that the 2nd set Italian ponies Trickles and co. were also made with two different coloured streaks!  Hence the red streak ones that have popped up like my Confetti...  I love a mystery!

what are windys symbols like? there is a version with just glittery symbols and a version with painted symbols with glitter on top there is a relationship between the hair colours and the symbol types.

this is US starshine (freed from her broken bubble) she came on a horizontal card. she has the heartthrob pink hair and a yellow symbol with glitter on top.

THIS is my childhood starshine (i am in the UK) she came with the vertical card 9which i still have) however she has the darker pink stripe (match for mummy appledelight) and glitter symbols with NO yellow paint under them.

the hoof marks on all three ponies is the same.
 
there are variation of all the rainbows, each with a different pink stripe and glitter vs glitter and paint symbols. there are also variatins of moonstone who came with large and small symbols.

Instead of the picture today I have five of them (missing still Sunlight), and I believed the only one of mine with pinker stripe is Moonstone.

She has painting under the glitter and her hair is same than Heart Throb. But I think my Parasol has painting too under her glitter, but her hair isn't so pink. So could it be so? :/

Hmmm, I have 4 Rainbow Ponies, Parasol, Starshine, Skydancer,and Moonstone.

Parasol, Starshine, and Skydancer seem to have more of a 'red' streak, compared to Moonstone who's streak is more of a Heart Throb pink.
