Silly bird knocking at my window!!!
« on: March 20, 2012, 12:28:36 PM »
My parents have been having trouble with a longtailed tit that has been tapping on the windows and I was wondering if anyone has had experience of this or knows why it may be doing this every day.

Here are a couple of pics and the last one is a video of the bird in action if you click on it.

My guess would be that he sees his reflection and thinks its another male tit in his "territory". You may need to a) tint your windows so he doesn't see his reflection  or b) put some paper or something up that he can see instead of his reflection.  Birds have been known to continue this until they kill themselves in order to protect their territory.

I'll second this! At least it's just tapping. After we cleaned our windows we had a rather unfortunate incident with a bird. I don't remember what kind as I think I blocked out as it was a bit gruesome.
 >_<^.^

He is a cutie :) a friend of mine had troubles with a bird knocking on one of her windows, she put tin foil around it, apparently the reflective surface stopped it tapping. I think that a mirror would probably work as well. If it attacks its own reflection, it's never going to win and will eventually give up and move on.

I hope he finds something else to ammuse himself with soon for your parents sake!

I agree with the seeing his reflection. :) Our canary with bop at his mirror if he sees himself (although he also knows how to do it to get our attention - he'll catch the light's reflection so it catches our eye :P )

You could put a cut out of a silhouette of a bird of prey on your window.  We have stupid birds in Canberra that are obsessed with tapping on windows because of their reflection and it helps to stop them.  It also prevents birds killing themselves flying into the window (which has also happened to me more than once unfortunately).

Yeah this was my guess too when I read this :)  That bird is very cute though :lovey:

Maybe you could put something on the window that'll block him being able to see his reflection so he stops   I also like xeevee's idea :P
