I'm worried about sunlight sunfading ponies in my room :(
« on: March 13, 2012, 02:40:18 PM »
So, being born last has its perks, but when it came time to choose new rooms I got the short stick. :/
I'm majorly worried about the amount of sunlight my room receives daily. My ponies are the most important thing to me, and the last thing I want to see is them discolored over time.
I've got a HUGE window that allows sunlight to hit literally every inch of my room 24/7 during the day! *cries*
What can I do to prevent future damage?
Has this happened to anyone's ponies?
I've even considered boarding up my window!
Would darker curtains help?
Added photos of all the places I am concerned for!
Any and all advice would be loved!!!

What a lovely collection of ponies you have there! :D

Yes, I think darker curtains would help. I myself am light sensitive so at home I have like papery blinds (they're one-use stickons, and pretty cheap - probably like $10 at Walmart or your local home improvement store) -- AND thick drapy curtains over them. ^^"

(Also, as a side note: I rent a student rez at the moment, so I can't even install curtains in my room.  >_< So what I did was create a temporary sunshield with tinfoil to cover the window... it actually worked!)

But for you, I would definitely suggest getting thicker curtains, or finding something - like a giant piece of card/bristol board? to act as a shield for some areas for the long term. :)

And temporarily, you could always cover some of the playsets with a blanket!

All the best!!  ^.^

Thank you. :3
I wonder if it would be cheaper to buy curtains or go to the fabric store and buy the heaviest stuff they have.

In case anyone wanted to see how sunny it gets here-

I set this on the windowsill a few weeks ago while I was cleaning and forgot about it.

Thick curtains would help :) I would also keep the ponies away from the window, in the darkest corner of the room. For me, it's the wall with the window.

I am somewhat lucky though, my pony room faces north, so I don't get a ton of sunlight in there!

I dont have any curtains or window covering made out of material because i find it lets in to much light and collects more dust.
i have those plastic horizontal blinds that you open with a stick? know what im talking about? i have really dark colors and the only place light comes in with those is around the edges and even then it does not go far.

They make specific curtains to keep light out. They are a bit pricy but do very well.

I have a smaller window, and a seal it shut with cardboard. ;) Aint no light getting through there. I do it so I can sleep though.

We bought special uv screening filters to use over the windows in the collection room, and you might consider those.  They let in some of the light, but not the particles that damage and fade colors.  They're a bit expensive for larger windows, but well worth the investment over time- even for your non-pony items.  Ours have been up for many years now, and the pony items that are nearest the window have not faded at all, nor have the curtains my mother made.

Thank you everyone!!

Sugarberry- You basically just made my day!
Do you by chance remember the name of the company that made the filters?
Those would be perfect for the window! <3

I don't recall the name of it, but I believe it was by 3M, and I looked but there's no sticker on it- just warnings about the chain pull and small children.  I did a search just now on Google for it to double check, but there are many brands and you may find one that is less expensive and just as helpful as ours.  Try searching up "UV protective window film" - it is sold in rolls, this is what we got, and it runs up and down by a chain pull- like blinds do.  I think there may also be just a paint you could coat your window with to make it like sunglasses, and that would be less expensive.  :)  Your local window blind store would probably have a roll of the film you could actually look at and feel.  Just as a heads-up, the only drawback to it is if you have it drawn down when the wind blows- it's a little (or more than a little) noisy.  I think sound fx folks could probably make a thunderstorm noise out of the rattling!  Hope that helps you Whoa! <3

Love the little Fairy Tails bird hiding behind her fluff of hair. Guess she is somewhat camera shy. LOL  I keep all of my ponies in a wardrobe away from sun.  I have learned with dolls that sun can really damage stuff and you can't see how it happens only that one day you look at your stuff and its no longer nice or its changed colors or lost color. Sigh..I love a sunny room.  Thats why all ponies must hide in the dark..poor girls.

I had the same problem with my room so we went to the fabric store and got black out fabric to sew on the backs of the curtains :) Another friend of mine just used wrapping paper and tape... :P

me I have my collection in my closet. that way it is away from the light. I converted my walk in closet into a pony room. Now I use the bathroom closet for clothes instead of towels. LOL But there is always a dresser for clothes instead.

I think DIRECT sunlight is the type that really does the damage, so your ponies should be pretty safe if they're protected by a thick curtain or something.  Be extra cautious with ponies known for fading, though, especially those with "fading pink" hair that fades REALLY easily.  I saw a nice sparkle pony Sunspot; you might want to hide her in a dark corner.
Nirvana grails:  Reverse Gusty (upgrade), Peru Windy and Moonstone (upgrade), Brazil TAF upgrades, Argie Powder w/ white hair (upgrade), French Windy and Moondancer (upgrades), Spain TAF's, TE's, and piggies.  These are my biggest wants, but I'm looking for tons more nirvanas, especially Greeks, Brazilians, and Peruvians.  Feel free to PM me for sales or trades.  But please note that I'm also fairly picky.

Worst comes to worst hit up a thrift store for a nice looking king size sheet to cover over your curtains (something darker to sew on the back side). Fabric can be very expensive and you definitely have a good size window to cover! I agree, cardboard would work wonders, is inexpensive and easily removable...
