I am going to stalk this thread...its an on going issue for me! Every time I try and cover them within home contents they tell me they can only do a certain maximum amount on a collection value with out an external audit....sigh...I fully intend to photograph everything and try submitting a massive document to them and see if that gets me further forward

Great idea for a topic Sarah-Bee!!!

I have never bothered to even try and get it..... I am sure any company either want receipts in the event of a claim.... or they find some way of getting out of paying out!

In the US, it would be covered under my homeowners/renters insurance, but I still have to submit a listing and values for each pony....

So I have not done it. I should though!

I work in insurance and have Been searching for a policy that covers collections!
My problem Is homeowner insurances method of basis of settlement you're unlikely to get what the pony is actually worth!!!

I'm working with my company to come up with something but that might be a while! Most collectible specialist insurance policies cover significant limits like £100,000 upwards there dont seem I be anything designed for smaller collections.

I'm going to keep searching!

Exactly as FPM says - either the collection has to be "very very valuable" and then your ll get a specialist or else it goes under home contents and as soon as you mention a collection with a regular insurance company they seem to get very reluctant...and want you to quantify everything [understandable but at the same time tough]! I am def going down the too much information path with them and see if I get anywhere...but I think it will have to be a different policy than a regular home contents one..

Thanks FPM I ll keep my fingers crossed you with your expert knowledge manage to track something down!

Thanks for the info FPM!

The reason this came up is that I enquired about making a claim for a lost (but since found thank God!) item of jewellery and the insurer said I wasn't covered! So hubby was talking to them (or rather shouting at them because they withheld a lot of info from us when we took out the policy - bad broker - will be cancelling and seeking a refund for mis-sale of policy) and practically nothing other than the basics like the TV and Sky box are covered! Not even his Xbox is covered! They said 'anything of value is not covered' which sent Joe crazy at them because 'everything has a value' which he's correct in saying, the insurance person didn't phrase herself very well but also couldn't explain exactly what she meant. And breathe.

It just feels like I'm paying for insurance (above the odds too as our house has had previous subsidence about 30 years ago as we live in an ex mining area) for nothing!

I might not search too deeply for specific collection insurance then if FPM knows the field and is still searching, though if you do turn anything up hun I would really be grateful if you could let me know! Thank you so much for the info, you've saved me a lot of time there. I'll certainly tell my new insurer when we choose one about my collection and see what they say....

Mine is insured through our general home insurance up to about £3000 I think as they asked for things with over £100 value. We don't have many things over that value. I really should get that increased some time. It's down as 'pony collection' (blame Mr G for that!) and they've never raised an eyebrow/sent a valuer in or anything like that, but I've never actually tried to claim anything relating to the collection. (we've had several leak claims, and I did get money for damage to clothes/shoes/etc that got damaged in one instance without too much trouble).

I've found two insurance companies online that I've sent enquiries to. One I don't think will come up with anything as they are for model trains specifically, but I have asked none-the-less. The other is for collection insurance and offers a bespoke policy BUT it does say 'as part of a high value home policy" so might only be available for mansion dwellers :P lol. I'll keep you posted x

sarahBee are you talking of Dovetail insurance? If so they only do it as part of HNW HH policy :( I specialise in high value household insurance so know the market fairly well!

LadyG how do you record your collection? In the event of a loss you'll have to prove value, do you keep receipts?

No I don't... I have a spreadsheet (well, several) of what I have, but not receipts. When we claimed for the contents of the wardrobe that were damaged, I just had to submit a list with approximate values on (this was mostly clothing and shoes). Like I said, it's on there, but I'm not sure what would happen if I actually  had to make a claim on it.

Mine are covered by our home contents insurance up to the maximum of £2000 for the whole collection, though it's worth way more than that. Fingers crossed that it will never come to me filing a claim for them.

I've found somewhere that looks promising, just discussing how we would agree market value in the event of a claim.

I don't want £5 for my ice crystal or punzie just because they happened to seek low on eBay or something or only get £5 for the tornado I bought that cheap as a bargain!

Part of the problem is that there is no official organisation or independent valuers who could determine value should something happen!

Nightmare!

I think this would be why I was told what I was the couple of times I have tried. When they asked if I had receipts I was "they are collectables so a receipt doesnt really equal their worth" then the couple of agents I spoke told me if it was over a certain amount I would need to have the collection valued....how does one value a collection of ponies?
