Regular pottery clay isn't water resistant and has to be fired in a kiln. The temperature for that is way too high for a pony. The pony would die. If you can't get Apoxie, you could try sculpey. A pony can survive oven baking heats for sculpey. I don't know about other clays.

Any craft store should have it.

Also you might want to try looking for milliput, it's the same thing as apoxie, but might also be available at your local craft store.

I'm in Northern Ireland, and we don't get Sculpey in our craft shops :/ Not sure about you down south, but I use Fimo Soft clay - you can find deals on Ebay for big blocks, or you can buy little packets of plain or coloured Fimo in craft shops. I think regular Fimo is air dry, but Fimo Soft has to be baked! :)

Milliput is extremely cheap on e-bay, you can also find it in model making and art stores (Like Hobbycraft). :)

I use Milliput, the gray/green style is quite inexpensive even at a craft shop. Also, I have used alternative sculpting methods such as the paper napkins plus a soft glue such as mod podge. Using soft glue and hard glue (brittle glue) together might make it stiffer, but more fragile. A softer glue or watered down gloss acrylic varnish or acryl would work as well. I think I'll post my making mountains experiment...

It should be perfectly safe to bake Sculpey in a regular oven. :)

Yeah. Sculpey can actually be baked on the pony in the oven. Just follow the directions on the sculpey package, and the pony will survive.

Oooh. The clay itself has no fumes. But if you put the pony in the oven, yes, there are fumes. Not toxic, I think.. It just smells very odd. Ive used my cooking oven and haven't had any issues. I just think the pony smells odd.

Don't use sculpey if you have any animals in the house with sensitive respiratory systems like birds.  Other than that, though, it's fine to use in your usual oven.  If you're worried about it, though, you can also do it in a toaster oven.  I don't know about your area, but it's possible to get cheap toaster ovens for $30 or less each here.
