These girls need some major help
« on: February 17, 2012, 11:22:41 AM »
So I was digging about in my basement looking for something unrelated to ponies when I came across the first two customs that I ever did AGES ago. Back then I didn't know anything about ponies, so I didn't remove any of the original markings (you can see right through the paint on the red one), they are chipped in places, the pegasus still has glitter wings, I didn't remove the hair...... well, just take a look XD

I want to give these girls a new shot at life, because they have suffered quietly for years. Anyone have any suggestions as to what I should do with them, or, better yet, how to go about getting those coats of paint off?

100% pure acetone baths and a bit of elbow grease ought to take the paint off, I'd think. You could go the whole shebang and give them brand new hair too.

I plan on it. Re-paint, re-hair, re-design. Just not sure what I want to redo them as. Though I suppose the first big task is getting them cleaned and de-haired first, lol. I wasn't sure about the acetone bath. I wasn't sure if it would eat away at the plastic or not.

I haven't ever had acetone eat through any of my ponies.. However I have had Goof off do it.  As for designs.. Hmm..  Designs always seem personal to me.. If there something you really love at the moment? Something you find beautiful? Something that inspires you? I always start from there and then develop ideas.

You could do a theme of rebirth.  It's about Easter time anyway and these darlings are getting a new breath of life.
I'm not really on here anymore. Email me if you need my for something.

Acetone WILL eat your ponies if you leave them in long enough! I've had it happen many times before so don't risk it!!!!!!

Sit yourself down with some cotton pads, gloves, and a bottle of acetone and go to work. You might want to soak the pads and let them sit on teh wings of the pegasus for about 30 seconds or so and then give it a good, hard scrubbing to get that glitter off. It's a real pain in the neck, but it will come off if you are persistent!!

As far as what to do with them, I would suggest taking the paint off first and maybe have them sit somewhere in plain sight where you can stare at them and maybe get some good ideas for them?

Well- what are they painted with? Are they sealed?
If it's just unsealed acrylic- you could wash it off actually. One custom that an old friend had made accidentally came into contact with water and it washed RIGHT off.

If you want to redo them, IP's suggestion sounds good.  Scrub scrub scrub until they are all clean and then give them new pretty paintjobs and hair  :)

Aellos- I'll give them a wash and see what happens. I don't -think- I sealed them back then, but I'm not sure. It's also been well over five years or more, so I have nooooo idea what the heck kind of paint I slapped on there XD

IP- Thanks for the advice. I knew acetone doesn't always agree with the G4 ponies (my poor pegasus T.T) but wasn't sure about the G3s.

I think that cleaning them off and letting them sit for awhile would actually be a pretty good idea, since at the moment no ideas are really jumping out at me, and because these are the only two ponies I have that aren't G4, so I want to do something awesome with them :D

im actually working on redoing two of my first customs also. I am just redesigning under the same theme though.  I must say acetone is the way to go if the paint doesnt come off with water.  I didnt have any on hand when i started undoing the first of mine and spent a weekend plus scraping the sticky gooy paint off with my xacto knife.  DONT DO THAT!!!!!  bad idea.  now my pony has knicks all over :<   i also like the rebirth theme!
