Custom Bases?
« on: February 17, 2012, 09:28:45 AM »
So while working on some stuff I had this idea to do a pony with a cute base under it. I'm looking for inspiration and advice on how to best build one and attach the pony to it....also permanent attaching or removable?

Thanks!

the Alien ponies I have (made by Eruna) and a persona custom (made by JPP) have removable bases -- I think thats the best route to go *nod*
all the "ponies with bases" i have look like they started out at wood.....then had clay added to make the details, and even little foot indentations (so the custom stood in the right place, and was more 'stable')

it is not removeable cuz the pony is tail heavy and wont stand otherwise. i made it out of a tile with some paint and some sculpting. i dont suggest using tile, its all i had at the moment.

I've seen people use the magnet in the G3 foot to make them stand on a removable base. :)
I'm not really on here anymore. Email me if you need my for something.

I've done one where I started with a wood base like this http://www.joann.com/basswood-wide-edge-plaque-8-x10-x3-4-french-corner/xprd623126/ and painted and added to it. These kind of plaques come in all shapes and sizes, they're very handy.

I prefer removable if possible. I'm working on a pony now that won't be removable, which is a bit sad, but there's no other option.

When I did a removable rearing pony on a base, this one, I attaced a dowel to the wood base and made a hole in the pony's foot that it slipped into.

I make mine out of wood and cut a whole for a magnet so it can hold the pony in place but you might not need it.
I have made stands out of lids too, like cotton bud lids, coffee tub lids and well anything else I can get my hands on, even nesquick lids lol
I would make her removable, but that's just me, I like to pick up the pony and look at it from different angles :)

I've only made one pony with a base. She's removable and can be displayed with or without her base. She's attached with dowel rods through her feet.

I made a base for a pony from a soup can lid and clay. It made for a nice thin base that was strong enough to keep him standing.

I love making bases and usually use mini mirrors. You can sculpt onto them if something needs extra support. Craft stores have them but I found a bunch at the dollar store too.

I made one out of a small canvas. I bought a kit for making dioramas to add plants and snow effects.

Awesome bases so far. I really should do more. Made three so far (all removable):

Little Red Riding Hood

It's made from cardboard and sculpted over. Many of the small pieces are removable too.

Mystic Pond Guardian

The base is made from aluminium foil and sculpted over. The water is a mirror set into the scene and a overhead foil printed with a nightsky on top of that. There are real quartz put into it too. Originally I wanted to put some fake grass on it too. Forgot about that. lol.

Baby Comet comes with his own comet to ride. Sculpted from Apoxie. Nothing fancy about it apart from massive glitter. lol.
