Full body repaint questions
« on: February 16, 2012, 05:47:20 PM »
Just wondering, Im doing a couple full body repaints, and want to add some sculpting to it,
so wondering, once ive painted to my liking do I seal the whole body? if so how many coats? then sculpt and once finished seal again? Just wanted to make sure I get it right first time!
thanks for your advice, ;)

You really need to sculpt before you paint.  If you sculpt after painting, the sculpting will be bonded to the paint, not the pony, which is a very weak bond and can easily peel off.

i suggest sculpting first then paint. you can seal after or as you go. remember to water down your paint AND your sealer to avoid brush marks. i only do one coat of sealer but a second coat doesn't hurt :)

Sculpt first, paint last.  If you paint first and then sculpt, if you have to remove clay, it could take the paint off, plus you'd have to sand, which would also remove paint.

Thanks guys. Much appreciated. So glad i asked first.but. What about rehair also. When do you fit that in. I want to sculpt clothes and paint the pony and rehair. So if i sculpt i cant sculpt up the neck till its rebaired and attatched. So how do you deal with the hair? To paint the whole pony without the hair. But after the body sculpting is done.  Please help. Am getting confused and think maybe no full body repaint possible if im sculpting. Is this the case?

No, not the case at all!   If I know I'm going to be doing a full body repaint, I'll paint, seal, and rehair the head first, and then attach it.  Once it's attached, I can go ahead with sculpting and painting the body.

This. If you try to sculpt after painting you are in for some heartbreak :C

But once you have painted sealed and rehaired the head, and then attatched it to the body so you can then sculpt then paint the body, you cannot add sculpting to the head?
So how do you do it if you want to add sculpting to the head, plus paint it, plus re hair it.

I would fully sculpt first then paint then rehair. If there is sculpting on the head I would rehair around it. If it is something like a unicorn horn I would even pop it off and then rehair and just glue it back on. Little things like that are best glued anyway. They pop off too easy in my opinion. Clothing that wraps around the body is more secure.

Actually, things like horns and wings need to have some type of anchor in the pony.   If they're just glued on, they'll eventually fall off.  I sculpt my uni horns over a wire that I secure into the head.  I always do the head first, because I want to be able to secure the glue on the inside, and if I'm sculpting around the neck, I want to make sure I have the head on so everything lines up.

Clawdeen is one that had a FBR and Sculpting

See, I knew I was going to be sculpting around the neck seam, so I painted, sealed, and rehaired the head and tail first, and then attached it.

Then I went ahead with my  sculpting, sanding and painting.

Hmm.. I haven't had any problems with bits falling off before, but I shall take your wire suggestion into consideration and play it safe in the future. Thanks!

I think it depends on what exactly you're sculpting.

If you need to sculpt say a hat on, it might be best to do some rehairing first. Or if you're just sculpting onto the legs, you could probably do that, paint and then rehair the head. One thing to watch is that pulling the tail through can flex the plastic which can, depending on the security of the sculpting and quality of the paint job, cause bits to flake or break off.

I always paint before I rehair though, even if it's just the strip around the hair because otherwise you risk getting paint in the hair and it is such a pain to make sure you don't miss any bits of plastic.
