Embroidery floss for rehair?
« on: February 15, 2012, 05:31:26 PM »
Ok, so I have used yarn and I love it! Its perfect for small children. I was wanting to make some with embroidery or crochet thread/floss and wondered if I could get some input.

what types work the best, and I guess my biggest question is ~ does it unravel easily? how do I keep it from doing this, should I seal the ends somehow?

Thanks everyone! :)

embroidery floss unravels on its own pretty easily, especially with handling like combing the ponies hair. If you want it to stay put, I think you'd need to seal the ends.

I know that she uses metallic tapestry thread because I am the proud owner of one of her ponies.  You don't have to seal the ends of that, it will stay put because of how they integrate the metallic fiber.

I think of BluePeg when I hear embroidery hair.  I've never tried it, personally.

those customs are beautiful! Really really stunning. Might have to try some of that in my test/learning customs to see if I can do it!  :lovey:

I have used metallic embroidery thread in place of tinsel, but I've never done a full mane or tail with it... yet.. :P

Here are a couple of my babies accented in metallics,

those are all awesome! thanks for sharing with me!
twistedrainbow~ how thick are the strands? (sorry I know nothing about embroidery floss) I have looked at some in the store but it seems the finer strands would unravel easier, or maybe you want them to...? Like I said aside from nylon hair, the only other thing I have used is yarn, but im trying to venture into the unknown here...LOL

I used basically the type of embroidery floss that TwistedRainbow has used for her customs. I have it all over the house so I used it for one of my first projects. I try not to brush mine all the time, but unless it is a tightly braided kind of floss it will unravel even as you are rehairing the pony. If you are worried about that you could just put a little dab of glue on the ends?
