Question about Dollyhair MLP Hair
« on: February 13, 2012, 02:30:00 PM »
Is there enough in one hank to do the main/tail of one full custom? Or should I buy 2 of everything I would like to use?

If you're not going to be adding a ton of plugs or widening the tail hole and doing SLH, then one hank will be enough to do more than one standard pony. I cut my hanks in half because I don't like mile-long hair on my ponies and I've been able to use one hank on 2-3 ponies. I don't add plug holes much though. :)

I actually disagree. I would absolutely buy two if your design uses one color predominately. I run a rehairing service and have found that many, many ponies require 1.5 - 2 hanks of hair. The hanks are not always the same width (some are thinner than others depending on  when you order them) and some ponies have either very larger plugs holes, very large tail holes, or more-than-normal plugs. Foreigns often have very long, tight plugs that require more hair. I personally would absolutely order 2, unless your plan on doing a kind of "50/50" color split, in which case one of each color would suffice.

ETA: I also cut the hanks in half. Half of a hank in more than long enough for a tail, and also for the mane (assuming you're using a rerooting tool) unless your custom has unnaturally long hair. When I did a Rapunzel recently, I (of course) did not cut the hanks in half. ;)

It depends on the generation you're customizing.  I've been able to get 2 or sometimes 3 G4 ponies out of one hank.  Other gens tho tend to use anywhere from 1.5 to 2 hanks of hair.  So, any gen other than G4, I'd def order two hanks.

Yea, I agree with StrawberryFair, I've never had a pony that didn't use more than one. Usually two. Then again, I like thick hair. I know one hank is enough but it always looks really stingy to me, like the pony is balding lol:)

Same here!  G1s usually take more (at least when I do them).

Maybe I'm strange then. I haven't even had a one-color G1 use more than a partial hank of hair.

Mab, as pictured in my avatar used more than one but I did thick plugs for her and left her mane long but gave her a short tail. With g4 Ponies I can do 2 with one hank and have almost enough for a third left over. If I do a g3 with a normal length mane and don't over do it on the plugs then 1 hank is enough with some left over.

That said, I suggest ordering 2 just in case. Having leftovers is a good thing anyway. Proper planning prevents piss poor performance, afterall!

I use around 3-4 per normal sized pony and 12 - 15 for styling I also cut mine in half. It's a personal preference. Go as thick as you want but always order more than you think you need. IT's safer that way.

Same here. I mean I usually do blends, but a solid pony has never been more than 1 hank for me. But it's always better to be safe than sorry. It's just $3 XD
