Coffee Dyeing?
« on: February 12, 2012, 02:45:14 PM »
Hiya pony peeps!!

I'm trying something new and I was wondering if any one else has used this method. I'm trying to create an aged/creamy color on some baits using coffee. Has anyone else tried this? How un/successful? How long did you let them steep? Pics of results? What about nylon hair?

Never heard of anyone using this to dye ponies before.  They'd sure smell yummy! (I love the smell of coffee)

ive never dyed a pony with coffee, but i have found that tea stains better than coffee.  Which is funny cuz the coffee is darker. *shrugs*  try it out!!! also try making a paste with the coffee grounds, rubbing it on and letting it dry.  A friend did that with a painting and it made a nice brown. I dont know how well it would work on the ponies though, so maybe try one you dont mind turning funny colors!

I agree with hlmlp, Tea is awesome for dye.  I've never used coffee, but I've dyed linens and lace with tea with really awesome results. I've never tried it on plastic tho. I'd be curious to see the results.

I'm positive I saw a custom where someone had done this years ago.  I don't remember who, but the whole idea seems so familiar to me (and as a non-coffee drinker, it's not something that would occur to me on my own).  So it should work!

I've tried tea and coffe on a pony. It didn't work.

this pony was dyed with tan rit dye - very very diulted. To get the uneven look (yes, uneven was intentional) I used wads of paper towel soaked in the the dye and left on the pony in random palces.

:(

So... the coffee didn't take... In fact the opposite happened, she became brighter. I had a tailor friend point out that I should try a mordant (like vinegar) to help "set" the coffee. I think I messed up the portions or timing or something. Off to try it again...

Yes, I remember this too.. or was it tea she dyed with?
I can't remember her name for my life, but she had an Indian (as in India) looking custom in her ava, I think...
I think this was like 4-5 years ago now, so.
But. those ponies got a LOVELY eggshell colour.

A word of caution: Coffee ponies FADE!

Mocha was made back in 2005 and had a gorgeous brown shade as you can see by the photos, but she quickly began fading. 5 years later her color had faded horribly and her smell was gone, the paint had seeped into the plastic and she looked... Not so good anymore. I cleaned her of any and all paint and gave her another boil.

I used a different coffee so she went much darker than I wanted, and everywhere she had been painted the coffee stained much much darker. I set her aside to let her fade a little and just now brought her out again (poor thing has half-painted eyes).

Mocha's one side is still dark brown, the other has faded and her whole head as faded to a light eggshell brown tone. I haven't tried to seal a coffee dyed pony. It might hold the color better or it might all fade none the less.

So my advice is to boil the pony and then set it aside for a month or two. It will fade and its such a shame to spend the time making a wonderful pony, just to have her fade almost instantly.

(Fist post on the new board x3 I thought this place had closed down! Good thing I was wrong :D )

I'm glad I wasn't crazy thinking this had been done but I am sorry to hear the long term results aren't good.
