I don't think bootlegged toys are dangerous. When I was a kid, most toys that we had were bootlegged and no one choked or got poisoned
As an adult, though, I would avoid buying bootlegged stuff because it's basically stealing. Or more precise, supporting theft.

In this case i wish the pony community was more like the pokémon collectors community. They don't support/tolerate bootlegs at all.

That's how it is in the G4 community. A 12" Flutterbat custom will run you several hundred dollars, or even crack 4 digits. Suddenly here's one that looks just as good for $25. Pretty easy choice for those who can't afford a custom.
Plus that company has put fan favorites including Coco, Cheese, Babs, Pinkamena, Flash Sentry (I can imagine someone going around at a con and placing him next to other's Twilight plushies  :devious: ) and Maud on the list, and is even willing to do fanmade characters (Snowdrop being the first) with permission. Fans who joined the site are even uploading their own OC's.

If the licensed makers got in gear and made some of these fans might go for them, but look how long it took to get a Luna one (Funrise was the first G4 plushie maker, and they flat out said they wouldn't make one. Then this year 4DE and OnlyFactory intercepted the ball and ran with it. Too bad for them :P ). And that was a character who was more popular than any of the other princesses. One off characters like those mentioned above would have a slim chance.

I'm still planning on getting the 4DE Luna ($60) unless a cheaper one comes up (the 4DE's shape does look a little off, but the Chinese one is also).

Nothing you said is a valid excuse to support a bunch of sweatshop bootlegs. Not to me anyways.
Sometimes when you can't afford something...you don't obtain it.
Ah well. I think there is something sad about people wanting a plush so much that they forget about the questionable way these things are made.

Well, like I said, toy standards exist for a reason. Just because it didn't happen to you doesn't mean it won't happen to other kids. And the thing is with MLP, a lot of parents get MLP merch for their VERY young children(1 year to 3 years) so that's definitely risky when there's NO quality controls and NO safety checks. I worry most about broken needles. Which seems to be the most common with bootleg plush. To a bootlegger - a needle falls in a plush, who cares? No one can pursue them legally for it. If their store gets shut down, they just start another one. It's concerning to say the least.

At the end of the day I guess it bothers some people and not others, like most things in life :P
