"There are no happy endings, because nothing ends."

I love this quote - it was my favourite bit from the film and one of my favourites from the book (although the bits about age might surpass it a bit on that end).

I watched the movie for the first time the other day. It was absolutely beautiful and very stirring, and I can't wait to get my hands on the book.

I always loved these quotes from the book:

"I am what I am. I would tell you what you want to know if I could, for you have been kind to me. But I am a cat, and no cat anywhere ever gave anyone a straight answer.

"She did not look anything like a horned horse, as unicorns are often pictured, being smaller and cloven-hoofed, and possessing that oldest, wildest grace that horses have never had, that deer have only in a shy, thin imitation and goats in dancing mockery.”

What's it like? Is it in any way similar to MLP, either G1 or G4?

I posted already, but I realized that I didn't actually comment on this question - as other people have said, they're not alike at all.  Without giving too much away, I think TLU is primarily a meditation on regret and the passage of time, and it really does a gloriously beautiful job of winding it's way through those issues.

I also liked Beagle's later novel "The Innkeeper's Song" (which sometimes gets brushed off for being weird and uneven) for the way it took a differently angled take of those same themes, and would recommend it to anyone who enjoyed TLU (although it's also heavier on the sex/violence, so that one's not an all-ages recommendation the way TLU is).

The book is amazing, the graphic novel is amazing, the movie is amazing! Basically everything Peter S Beagle writes is amazing! (And he wrote the script for the movie too!). I also strongly recommend Tamsin as well!

Also, for fans, there's a Last Unicorn screening tour going on until 2016! They are in Canada right now and I just went to the Vancouver event and got my books signed by Beagle :D I would highly recommend that people check the tour out! http://lastunicorntour.com/

I'm not a fan of Beagle in general, but I have loved TLUnicorn since I was 2. So much that we rented the tape so often my parents made an illegal copy! XD

Nowadays I own the Bluray, though. My friend had gotten the DVD, but it was edited... and after it's ingrained in your mind for 2 decades, it kinda makes you twitch. :p

I picked up the book about a year ago and it's very close to the movie (namely because Beagle wrote the book and the screenplay.. he also wrote the RhankinBass (sp?) version of The Hobbit too)... and going off on a tangent, GOD do I want to own a cel from TLU! But they're $500-$2000 each...

Also, has anyone kept up with the Tour? They're doing another go-around the States soon. I missed it the first time, but am anxiously awaiting them to come back to Texas. (Canada users here may want to see if they've missed it yet. That's where they are now.) They have special stuff and Beagle is in person/signing stuff.

I love both the book and the film, I had to get a second paper back copy because I am wearing out the first copy.

I love the book, and if anyone hasn't read the follow up story in The Line Between, it's amazing too.

WHen i was a kid this was one of my fave all time movies and books.. I always associated with the character of molly.
Even more so now that i am grown.. having lost and found my MLP collection...I can completely relate when she demands of the Unicorn where had she been in her youth.
Its a great story about ageing, mortality, love and a lot of other themes.. You should read you will like.

I went!  It was awesome to hear Beagle speak- he is really eloquent.  It was fun hearing from his team too, they are so loyal and awesome.   It was especially cool to see that "The Last Unicorn" sold out nearly every seat that it played in Seattle-  yay for boat-loads of geeks I guess.

And yes-  I was one of THOSE people (they encourage attendees to dress-up- so of COURSE I did)

Thanks for the suggestion! It took almost 4 days to read, which is slow for me but well worth it.

I read it, but a looong time ago.  I was in fifth or sixth grade.  I think I'm due to read it again - I'll probably appreciate much more.

Galactica - your costume looks awesome!!

I also second the recommendation for "The Innkeeper's Song" for teen/adult readers. "Giant Bones" is a collection of short stories that includes a follow-up story to that novel.

Here's an interview with the author about "The Last Unicorn" at Fan Expo Vancouver!

That art is awesome and I love your costume.  I read the interview and I find it great how you meet authors in person and they truly love the books they write and are really into it.  I loved after so many years that he loves people are still into his work instead of being a grump about it and he says "not these people again" as in fans.

I have a DVD version of The Last Unicorn, the book, a custom by MBryan, and the soundtrack to the movie.  I almost thought about getting the blu-ray version of this DVD but not sure how much better the quality would be, especially if it's not made for blu-ray since this movie came out long before DVD's even existed.  Has anyone gotten the blu-ray version and is it any better?
