Love the book and the movie. Been a fan of the story since I was like 4 or 5? It's something I would recommend to anyone and everyone because it *is* such a wonderful and well written story.
Unfortunately I haven't been able to get my hands on the graphic novel yet but I will.

The movie was and is one of my all time favourites. I have my own DVD so I don't have to wait til it plays on TV again like every Christmas.
Considering this I HAD to read the book, it gives you some more information than the animated movie does. I am always curious if the book and the movie differ a lot and especially when the original is in English I want to read the original not the German translation. It is rather short but absolutely worth reading - that is my personal opinion but I gave my best friend a copy and she loved it too. To me it has nothing in common with mlp but my childhood memories.

This is my beautiful 40th anniversary edition ^-^

Yeah I read it and own it.  I bought it a while ago after having the DVD for some time and someone recommended I read the book so I did.  It's a really awesome read.

I definitely recommend both the book and the movie!  So many times people complain about movies straying so far from the book or the movie being so much worse than the book...this is not the case here!  As someone earlier mentioned, there are enough differences between the two to keep things interesting, but it's really neat to see how closely they are connected, as well.  I think they actually enlisted Peter Beagle to help write the script for the movie (but don't quote me on that - I thought I read it somewhere lol).  That's what helps make the movie just as awesome as the book!

ANYWAY - so many people might write off the book and movies as "for kids," but I think it's SO DEEP and definitely for adults, also.  I would actually recommend watchign the movie FIRST and then reading the book.  I think it helps the book flow and allows you to get into it a lot easier if you see the movie first... but even if you read the book first, you won't be disppointed either!

It's definitely not a waste of your time.  AWESOME book and AWESOME movie!

OHMYGOSH -

FAVORITE FILM, OF ALL THE TWENTY YEARS I'VE BEEN ALIVE!

<3

What's it like? Is it in any way similar to MLP, either G1 or G4?

It is nothing like MLP at all. The only similarity between the two is that they both feature unicorns and that is all that they have in common. If that turns you off, then you are missing out on something amazing.

Both the book and the movie are very good. Though, despite having grown up on the movie, I now prefer the book even though they are both very similar. There are a few changes between the two, but nothing major like the differences between the Harry Potter movies and books. ^.^

I haven't read the book or seen the movie YET, but I highly recommend the 6 issue comic book adaptation!

Here's an interview with Peter S. Beagle about the comic!

I have read the book and I have seen the movie countless times. It's one of my favorites of all time, has been ever since I was a child. I highly recommend both of them! And the graphic novel is amazing as well.

I've never read it, although I will get around to it at some point. However, I own both the movie and the graphic novel (which is absolutely gorgeous, BTW), both of which I love.

READ IT!!! Seriously. I picked it up at the flea market. It was $0.50 and I knew I liked the movie. Anyone who likes the movie will like the book. As I was reading it, I kept thinking to myself, "WHY HAS NO ONE EVER TOLD ME TO READ THIS BOOK!!!". It was so good. I loved it. I would put it up there with Neverending Story, which is among my favorite fantasy books. I even sent it to my sister to read, so I currently don't have a copy. I will pick another one up if I get the chance.

MLP doesn't have epic fantasy novels, so it is not like MLP. If you only like very happy stories, you may not like it. It is a beautiful story with a good ending, though, it is not a super happy ending.

I love this book.  I would almost classify it as more for adults than for kids because I think the philosophical themes aren't easy for children to grasp especially when it comes to questions about aging and mortality.  I think the author captures the essence of the unicorn perfectly.
