Tablecloth or placemats?

i use placemats, just easier to wash that way.
my grandma has a larger dining room table, its where we have thanksgiving every year xD she has a table cloth on that but she also has a heavy clear vinyl sheet thing she puts over it so even if someone does make a spill, it doesnt ruin the cloth. :p

I have tablecloths that I use but I plan on buying some placemats soon too.  I plan to use both.  My Grandfather gave me his old chrome dinette set recently (I think it orginally belonged to my great grandmother) and I want to protect it (it's not mint but I'm not going to make it worse lol).  I have a temporary plastic tablecloth under the vintage tablecoth on the table but I'll get some from hobby lobby sometime to put under the tablecoth so that no water can get to the metal.

Placemats & a runner. My parents usually have both tablecloth + mats, or sometimes runner + placemats like me. I don't really have any tablecloths and I kinda like my small kitchen table as it is. Should get some new runners though, and possibly new placemats too, I'm getting bored with the old ones.

We use placemats except once a year.  The exception is Halloween and that is only because I have a cool glow in the dark one.
