Tell Me: What is the Best Way to Search for a Job?
« on: October 24, 2013, 07:23:18 AM »

Okay, I need help.  I use Indeed.com and search by salary and weed through all of the available positions.  I've noticed that when I go by industry, I get weird results...so I figured minimum salary requirements would be better...even though I have to weed through 100's of pages.

But this isn't working either :sigh:

Give me your tips and tricks!

I like Monster & Craigslist. Monster is very legit and you can post your resume. That's how my hubby got his new IT job, and he's loving the company that hired him. I found my current job on Craigslist. Most of the stuff on there looks like crap or scams though, so do make sure to make a new email account so you don't get totally spammed. I tried using Indeed.com but didn't really like it. Good luck job hunting! ^.^

I got fired about a week ago (it was the job with the verbally abusive boss I posted about in WYP) and I'm going to a job counseling center geared towards placing women. It does cost money for sessions, but it's a good way to learn how to write a great resume and cover letter and how to do an interview. I'm not sure if they have that type of service in your area but it's worth looking into.

If you have the time and you're looking for just about anything, hitting up a mall and handing out resumes is good. It's around the holidays and retailers will be looking for temp workers. Good luck!

This is something that I have done in the past. It has gotten me 3 jobs. 2 in one city and 1 of them was traveling to that city. I looked up the places of work in the area. I would send them my resume if I could online or by mail. Sometimes I got a response and some time I did not. I would dress up a bit. Just something nice and with resume in hand would walk into the location and present my resume and my desire to work for the place of business. Some places have not posted jobs or searching for jobs so if they can skip all that they will. It also looks good that not only did you contact them before, but you are willing to come in person to their location. Just be prepared you could get an interview on the spot.

With my move to FLorida, I have been sending my resume and contacting places that I would like to work. I have a few places that are waiting to meet with me, once I am down there. I feel I will have a job by the weeks out.

One of the jobs I got just for walking in was a manager position at a music store, Another was just a sales associate that got quickly promoted to floor manager. Do not just limit yourself.  If you take the time to ask and put your self out there the worst they can do is say no and you move on....if you do not try then its always a definite no.

Good luck:)

I'm with crowning_glory, one of my current jobs I just got by dressing professionally, walking in with a resume and speaking with the manager. It's been a great job! Other potential jobs I have found using indeed or jobs.ca (in canada). Sometimes it is just by word of mouth through people. I'm starting a new job next week that I got when a girl I went to school with posted about it as her was her position that she was leaving. I applied, had an interview and got the job!

Good luck with your job search!

I've always been rather lucky with job getting. A year and a half ago I was an 18 year old with no job experience who had no plans to go to college. I applied for a job as a teacher in China, got it immediately, went over, quit it, and then went to interviews and had about... 6-8 jobs while I was there. Hard to remember. Short contracts. Salaries. Then I got back to america three months ago, applied to a a single art job on craigslist, and had a full time job as a graphic designer within two weeks of getting back. 0_0 So I'm not sure how most people would find jobs. However I have apparently had great luck with craigslist.
