The opposite of buyer's remorse?
« on: August 02, 2013, 09:45:56 AM »
So, yesterday I went to the mall for the first time in weeks.  I went into Hot Topic and was amazed at all the FiM merchandise.  Once the clerk found out I was a collector, she started bringing me everything from pony phone covers to shoelaces to trading cards.  I was overwhelmed with cuteness.  I couldn't decide what to buy.  I ended up getting some decals and a collector box. Now I am wondering if I should have gotten more.  Will I regret not getting the limited edition pony comics or cell phone plugs?  Should I have gotten the cute t shirt?  How do you decide what stuff to get and what to leave behind?  What if the comic turns out to be sought after and worth $100 in a few months?  Is it ridiculous that this kept me up last night??

Haha this happens to me all the time at hot topic cause there's only 3 in Canada and they're all in Toronto area, so I only go when Im in the area.

I have a bunch of the comics, and they do go up slightly in value, but enough to be worried about (a 7$ comic I bought in store in Toronto was going for around 25$ at Ottawa comiccon months later). I wouldn't worry too much about reselling any of the merch or their value, cause nothings really "limited" except the Chase variants of the Funko characters (sparkly versions). Just buy what you really like, and if there's something you left behind that you really wanted you can always order it online :)
I limit myself with merch is only buying things with Pinkie or RD. I don't buy the Ditzy or DJ stuff because even though I like it, I don't love it, and theres sooo much of it. I bought Ditzy and DJ nail polish, but that was only because they had a buy one get one free sale so I bought Pinkie and RD and got the other two free.
So yeah, don't stress! :) they're always makin' more.

As a teen in a family who lives paycheck to paycheck, I have to leave pony things behind all the time too. It sucks. Anyway, I just buy what interests me most, and then two weeks later, hope I can get some other things I had previously left behind then.

You have to limit yourself to certain things or you will seriously go insane. And broke. And end up on that show about Hoarders.

I am going to go to Hot Topic to get some things for my Luna army. I usually get my comics elsewhere because they are WAYYY cheaper. I don't know enough about comic books in general to really know how to 'invest'.

I agree with Chaos, do not worry about missing out on something too much or thinking that anything is going to truly be limited edition/hard to find.

Yes, G4 has seen a tremendous amount of merchandise, however it has also seen that merchandise sold and stocked in volume which we have never seen with MLP before. If we can track down super rare and not widely available even in the 80s MLP merch on ebay and through sites like the area now...can you imagine how easy it will be to find a lot of the G4 merch in the future - once MLP is a little less fashionable and some people grow out of the fandom?
Thank you Matcha for my gorgeous Baby Fifi avi

You guys are right.  I guess it stems from thoughts of Rapunzel and the fact that if I had a time machine I would go back and get tons of the G1 mail order items because they were limited and now incredibly valuable.  But, that is because they were sold for children mostly.  These days, so much of the merchandise is made for adult collectors in the first place.  And we foresee that and keep items to resell later. It is a different kind of collecting.  Being a G4 collector is so different than G1 collecting.

Ahh the time machine thought...  We have all had that one.  On more than one occasion, I have been so excited about ponies, that I did not sleep the whole night!

My fantasy is raiding K-mart & buying them out of Mimics XD

Oh, yeah, and paying in quarters from the 70's/early 80's so no one will suspect I'm from the future.

The time machine thought has haunted me for years, since I saw Rapunzel go for $600 on ebay.

^This.  I limit myself (mostly) strictly to ponies that have brushable hair and that actually look akin to ponies to me.  I say "mostly" because I do have a soft spot for pony friends and will collect sea ponies if they happen to come to me in a lot.  I do have a very limited amount of merchandise (and my MLP sheets from childhood!), but early on in my collecting, I vowed that I was a *pony* collector, not necessarily an all-inclusive series collector.  It's helped a ton with helping me walk away from things :)
