Well "My" core 7 were Firefly, Medley, Applejack, Bowtie, Glory, Lickety Split and Cotton Candy
Hmm... I would definitely have to go with the characters who were so prevalent in the cartoon, because I think Hasbro would have used the cartoon to sell the toys and vice versa, like they usually do. I also think they would choose 7 with distinctly different personality traits, to draw in the most amount of fans so that everyone had a 'favorite pony' to love. Thus the Core 7 in my mind would be:Gusty - already a popular toy because the cartoon because of her pretty color scheme and symbol, and topped off with a sassy personality that made her the favorite of many fansWindwhistler - one who seems to show up in a lot of the episodes, especially when they need a person to figure out problems, and more levelheaded than most of the other poniesFizzy - another big favorite personality from both the movie and the cartoon, she showed up in a lot of episodes and everyone loved her bubbly clueless innocence, plus the Twinkle Eyes were a popular seriesHeartthrob - her exaggerated way of speaking and romantic personality made her fun to watch in various situations, she also seemed to be one who showed up in a lot of eps (could be switched out with Truly, they were actually kinda similar)Sweet Stuff - every group needs a pure goodhearted one, and Sweet Stuff seemed to fill that role in a lot of epsShady - part of the appeal of the original cartoon was that not all the personalities were positive ones, Shady's pessimism and constant worrying was an interesting dynamic amongst all the other poniesBaby Lickety-Split - she was pretty much the main character of the movie and I think her situation (being overlooked by adults and chided when trying to stand out) really spoke to many young girls
