Hong Kong or China sets?
« on: October 30, 2016, 04:05:01 PM »
A while back I read on Facebook that some of the g1 sets were marked either Hong Kong or China. I started checking the set that I knew about and I discovered that I did have both of the "Blueberry Baskets". I checked my other dublicates, but none of them were marked differently. So, I'm just wondering what other sets had the different markings. Any help would be appreciated. I hate to think that I passed one up because I thought it was the same pony that I already had. Thanks in advance.

I know the fancy pants babies are marked with Thailand or china. North America got the Thailand release while I believe Europe and new zeeland and Australia got the made in china realses. There are some slight differences between the two sets. Most notably baby splashes has pink hair instead of purple, and some of the babies have different colored forelocks.

Other sets I know that have hk vs China:
Wingers
Sundae best ponies
Pearlized babies
Loving family sets
Playset ponies
Starlight babies
Brush and grow ponies
Tux and tails

I know there are more!

Ooo I love this! I used to try to collect China only Sundae Best ponies, but ended up with a couple HK ones as well (only to sell them all bar 2 HK Swirly Whirlys (?? xD ) a couple years back when I went through a 'I've quite collecting' phase) :)

Is there a difference in country for the fat head vs normal flutter ponies? Or is it just batches?

Speaking of Thailand, there are Thailand made Mountain Boys, but those are incredibly rare and I don't think we've seen many of those circulate or even the whole set (correct me if I'm wrong on how many there are o:) .

Interesting that Blueberry Baskets also comes in both versions, as she wasn't part of the European sweetberry line and mostly the Chinese ones show up in Europe and the HK in the States. I think this just proves it's to do with batch.

All non-nirvana flutters are made in China. I think they are the first set to be made in China, actually, of all the sets that Hasbro made.

There are only four Fancy Pants babies with a China version; Sunnybunch and Bows weren't sold here, so we don't have alternate versions for them. Splashes has pale pink hair/aqua forelock. Starburst has a yellow forelock and the paint on her panties design is different. I think Chinese is pink and blue symbols and the Thai one blue and yellow. She's also not as bold a pink colour, some I've seen have been paler than others. Glider and Dots and Hearts have minor differences, basically the Chinese ones look less stoned than the Thailand ones!

Are there actually legitimately HK family parents, as all the ones I've seen here with any residue of HK on their hooves have been NC ones. The US package says HK though...I think? Can't check, it's at home.

The Starlight Babies can also be NC. And trust me, the Starlight Babies have a lot of variations going on, so I can't give you a key way to spot China vs HK on them except by the hoof. I have four different Chinese Baby Mischiefs, although I haven't seen the same number of variations (yet!) for the HK or NC versions.

Oo I didn't realize there were China Brush N Grows.  I knew about the other sets, but am still missing a few  Sundae Best and need some upgrades of others.

I have 3 different sets of pearlized babies :)   One china, one Hong Kong, both with forelocks for all but the unicorns. And then a set from china with no forelocks.

I found the variations file I was talking about in another thread so thought I'd post it.
This lists all my ponies so the ones who have a country of origin and a pat pend/non pat pend together are direct from my ponies. If they only have a country then they're ones I've heard of or seen pics of but haven't been able to see their feet. There are some with unconfirmed info so I've put a ?. It's a few years old so I've just updated a couple of bits like the brush and grow ponies but there are other things that need changing too. Of course if you can help with more info I'd love to hear from you :)

Ahhhh Chrissytree, I was looking for that list!! Thanks for reposting!

Taffeta I could have sworn I've seen hk sweet celebration daddy and mommy. But you know it was soooo long ago, it might have been a nc with left over hk stamp! I know there are babies marked with both china and hk.

As a kid I had both Hong Kong and China versions of family ponies and some sweet berry ponies .. I'm in the USA, and what the did was switch factories in the middle of production. The Hong Kong on the boxes of the sweet berry and the family ponies where covered with stickers that said made in China.

There are also China / HK versions of TAF babies, Satin n Lace, the first set of twice as fancy ponies (Europe), and I'm assuming more.

The brush and grows made in China were not sold in the USA. Most of the Chinese ones have the foot stamp in a circle like the French ponies did. It's very interesting.

Question :P
How much this will affect on the ponys price when it is made in HK or China? I haven't seen it affecting or I haven't paying attention to it. Ofc boy pony made in thailand might be little bit different but in general these "normal" ponies

Not much of a difference for the most part. Maybe a couple dollars more in a bidding war for a set conpleter.

The fancy pants baby made is china are a little more expensive than the Thailand counterparts. I'm not sure if the rainbow babies were marked hk/china but it would apply to them as well. Basically the more obvious differences in the two ponies, there's a price difference.

Taffeta I could have sworn I've seen hk sweet celebration daddy and mommy. But you know it was soooo long ago, it might have been a nc with left over hk stamp! I know there are babies marked with both china and hk.

I think that it might be those covered over NC that's making me uncertain as well. Not all of them are well covered but the eyes give them away as NC. The babies are different; not aware of the babies with NC.

The factories changed a lot during that time period, but they didn't necessarily keep consistent between the US and Europe. We tended to not get any HK ones after a certain point, whereas the US still has later ones made in HK, so obviously there are a few factories at work...

Edit to add: I had my pony packaging out yesterday, adding the new ones I got at ponycon, and two things I noted from them which relate to this debate.

The US box back I have for the Apple Delight Family (which was sold as store import here in the UK at Woolworths) does indeed have the label Clipper mentions saying they are made in China not HK - and the ponies were also made in China, all three, when I had them in my possession.

The UK backcard for Twisty Tail the Brush and Grow says she is made in China. However, all of my Brush and Grow ponies, including walking pose Twisty Tail, are made in Hong Kong. We had US imports on these as well, in boxes, at Woolworths; my childhood Braided Beauty came in a box, not on a card, but that wouldn't apply to Walking pose Twisty. Even more confusingly, the pony that came with the card in my collection was a US Twisty Tail. These were from a childhood collection and the original owner was certain it was the only brush and grow they had ever had...so I think there's more to that one than meets the eye.
