Lightly Dyeing G4s?
« on: April 09, 2016, 11:37:06 PM »
Tying into the recent pattern of questions being asked about dyeing G4 Ponies, I was wondering about doing really pale dye jobs. There are a few customs I wanted to make where there simply aren't any Ponies with the right colour that are feasible to use so I was planning to dye them since it doesn't block out the original finish of the plastic like painting does, but I thought I'd ask a few things before I tried.

Would rit dye work for doing really light dye work? All the Ponies I'm using are recently made G4 Ponies using the new face molds. I know these don't take dyes very well, or at least not the regular liquid rit dye I plan to use, and that rit's colours are fairly bright but perhaps those two factors together would give me the right colour.
I'm planning to use these for Sparkler (tinting Rarity light blue), a pale pink fan character (Holly Dash is the exact colour I'm trying to get close to), and a minor character that I'm using Pursey Pink as the base for (I'm trying to make her a more orangey yellow, similar to Sunset Shimmer)

My other question is about left over glue, I saw in one of the other topics on using rit dye that in the example there were streaks from glue that went unnoticed and I was wondering how I can avoid it without soaking the toy in nail polish remover.

Thank you

This is a good question and from what I know many of us have been trying our hands at dying G4 again. I know that the older waves had some issues with taking rit dye evenly (especially G4 Rarity).

I assume you have seen this topic as you have mentioned the streaking?

I would not suggest soaking a G4 in acetone, I've done that and it DOES cause the pony's body to shrink a bit.. I can't find the AJ I tested this on when I was trying to do something but it does cause a little hassle with getting the neck plug back in. My suggestion for the glue residue is to just swipe the pony's body several times with Acetone. Not sure how many times but the more times the better I say XD

As far as Rit itself, I used Rit Dyemore and while she ended up dark (I think she is darker in the photos than she originally was because I was taking photos with my phone) that was due to having her sit in the bath for the recommend 30 minutes.. however, it's been several months since I dyed here and she has lighten up quite a bit

To this (warning these are HUGE photos as my camera goes to 4000x3000 pixels) She may be a little darker than the photos but not by much!

I have no idea if she is still fading but this should give you an idea if you decide to use Rit's DyeMore product..

That seems to be more or less what I'm looking for (and yes, your topic is exactly the one I'm thinking of) though I wonder if the other colours stay better; I know that blue is a fugitive colour to begin with so it tends not to stay as well as other colours (I remember when I was a child I had a piece of ceramic I had coloured with markers and the eyes kept fading).

I may try dyeing with the normal rit dye for the pink and perhaps changing the yellow on
Pursey Pink, I still don't have the hair for those projects so I should know by the time I get it if the pink will hold

I have some other colors in the Rit Dyemore that I will be testing with more Rarities when I get a hold of some :)

Just keep in mind no matter which dye you use, the pony has to set for a while or else there will be dye bleed in paint
