Sundazzle Pony, hair HELP!!

I got a beautiful Sundazzle pony (a few marks I'm fixing up, but overall nice condition). Her tail looks so great and is still crimped, but her maine is in such bad shape. Any tips? I know you aren't supposed to use flat irons, but can you boil these? If not, can you use hot tap water? Can I use conditioner or fabric softener? Not sure what to do!

I've seen on various websites/videos online that you can use either conditioner (and shampoo if you need to need to clean it) and fabirc softener

Conditioner - *COLD WATER* and hold the hair up while you wash it.  Don't let the weight of the water pull it down (it will pull some of the curls/crimps outs). 

My method...I wash the hair gently in cold water, then layer tons of conditioner on it and comb it through (maybe a large tooth comb in this case), then I let the conditioner dry completely - usually overnight.  I wash it out the next day, again, cold water.

Its colour changing as you know so you need to be super careful with heat unfortunately. Do you have a picture of what you are describing? Unfortunately colour changing hair can simply break beyond repair after time and a few too many changes.
