Question about customs/rehairs
« on: April 17, 2014, 04:03:57 AM »
A few of my last rehairs seemed to turn out all right until after styling, one of the ones I am currently having issues with is a G2 Sky Skimmer of my sister's who's hair was beyond saving. After her rehair I styled her hair like I do many of my other ponies with just simply wrapping her mane and tail in paper towels and securing them around her neck and back leg respectively. Her tail I think will be a fairly simple fix but her mane wants to separate about half way down. The top half looks fabulous but then the bottom half is still not together quite how it should be plus it's got a rather large space between it and the rest of the mane. I'm tempted to take the easy way out and just add a few more plugs into the "bald spot" but would rather just find a way to keep all her hair together? Any suggestions?

To be honest I cannot figure out what is the issue  Could you perhaps picture the pony?

Are you trying to get her mane to hang in a "sheet" rather than have the neck curl separate out into two curls? (I think that might be what you're asking...but not sure)

If so, I've found that adding a bit of conditioner or even fabric softener (like a noncolored version, or a free- and clear type) to the hair and then brushing/combing, and then wrapping helps keep the curl in one large curl rather than smaller separated peices.

Don't know if that info really helps you, but the fabric softener or conditioner trick has worked for me before. Sort of like an invisible, soft hold hair gel for ponies.  Keeps the big curl together in one large mane curl rather than lots of smaller little curls that sort of "fluff up" at the ends.

I was tired when I made the first post so I'm not sure if I'd explained it right but anyway here is a picture of the issue I'm having.

I've conditioned her hair before styling but I've not tried fabric softener sheets yet, but I'm willing to try if that will help the problem. As I said in my first post if worse comes to worse I'll just make a few more plugs to fill in the bald area but I'd really rather keep that a last resort.

I've had this sort of problem with some of my G1 ponies before.  Just wasn't sure if you meant the ends or the base of the mane.  Thanks for the pic!

Try wetting the hair under very hot, running water and then dip the lower half in some liquid fabric softener (a clear or white-colored kind, because a colored liquid might discolor the hair) and then comb it again with a fine tooth comb.  Start at the bottom and comb your way up, all the way to the base of the mane.

Once you do that, try re-wrapping the hair in a neck curl like you've done before and use the paper towels like you said you were doing.  For the pony with super stubborn hair like I had, I did all of that, then wrapped her hair and secured with a paper towel/rubber band and then applied some liquid fabric softener to the base of the mane where it had previously separated.  I just dipped my fingers in the fabric softener and then sort of rub it/soak it gently into the base of the mane where the separation occured.  It sort of added a bit of weight to the mane and also gave it a sort of "dried hair gel" feel -- the fabric softener sort of "holds" the hair together.

If it separates in the same spot again, you might even try boiling the hair for a little bit and then CAREFULLY combing/following the same steps I mentioned.  Sometimes the extra heat helps work the bends/kinks out of pony hair.

Maybe this'll help fix the problem, rather than having to reroot/fill in her bald spot.  :)

Thanks so much! I will definitely give that a try, I was at a loss what to do since everything I'd tried before posting wasn't seeming to work at all.
