Why is your collection special to you?
« on: December 30, 2013, 01:29:37 PM »
We all have lovely collections here--and all of us, for one reason or another, collect ponies. Why is your collection different than all the rest? What makes your collection stand out? In short, what makes your pony collection special?

I'll start, I suppose! My pony collection is special because every pony came to me at a time I needed it. Sure, that sounds sappy--but I'm a sentimental person, and I've had a rough emotional go of it most of my life. Ponies are what keep me sane sometimes, and getting a new one to add to my collection has never failed to brighten up the darkest hours of my life. My collection is also special in that I have never sold a pony--I traded with a friend way back, but I got ponies in return for that! My childhood ponies are all still with me, and I count that as a very special thing. I don't know what I'd do without them.

So let's hear your stories! Why is your collection special?

My ponies matter to me because they're another reminiscence of my childhood. I keep my childhood things very near and dear to me, especially my Disney related items. I was into ponies when I was younger, I don't remember how much I was into them but I had plushies and watched cartoon and had a few brushables if anything. I remember taking my big yarn haired Rainbow Dash to a slumber party camp out at my cousins. Unfortunately, the only pony things I have left from my childhood are 3 McDonalds ponies.

Now I collect ponies because they brighten up my day. I had them when I was overcoming my anorexia and still now as I'm struggling with my depression. My ponies are on shelves behind where I spend most of my day, the computer. I can just glance back and look at this rainbow explosion of miniature horses and smile. I've done it a few times while writing this. My mother was rather troubled with it at first, especially as I started buying more and more. We even got into a fight about it. It was really awful, but she's given up and just accepts it now and  helps me look for them. While I was into G4 I got into G1. The only G1 things I knew about were the movie, which I watched a few times as a kid and thought was really cute. I started collecting them too, and my G1 collection is rather small it still means so much to me. I'm a big fan of all 80's related things. It also introduced me to other franchises like Rainbow Bright or reminded me of my big Care Bear collection. I'm also getting back into G3 and have a small collection of G3 gals. I dont want to sell or trade any duplicates I get unless I absolutely have to, and if anything they might get turned into a custom. And like you I also find joy in adding a new pony to the 'hoard'. It's a sure fire way to cheer me up again.

Ehh this turned into a quite a ramble, but there's my thoughts!

Well, there's the sort of "thrill of the hunt" that collecting just about anything I'm fond of gives me.

But on a more specific note, they give me lots of nice things to look at and pick up and bring along should I so wish. And they make this particular room all the more colorful.  ^.^

It reminds me of a somewhat happier time in my life- I have some ponies that I or a friend bought that I used to own and some that I wanted that my sisters had that I liked , then some I never had but were from the Generation I grew up with (G1) I have some G3's and G4's that I adore (like Nightmare Moon, I am looking for a Luna) but what got me back into it was buying Bubbles from a member here, she was and still is my Favorite G1 pony.   Some don't know why I collect them but I don't care what they think.  It's my life and If I want to collect ponies I will.  It makes me happy.

Each pony in my collection represents either an important time in my life, or a particular aspect of my personality. For example: Creamsicle is on my wishlist because giraffes remind me of the circumstances surrounding my daughter's birth, I collect autumn ponies because every important moment in my adult life has occurred in the fall, and I have G1 and G3 Butterscotch because butterscotch is one of my favorite candies. :)

Now of course there are some members of the herd that I picked up simply because they're pretty; but for the most part my collection directly reflects parts of myself or my life.

My broher started to collect G4 and so I being the first one in the family to have a pony collection back in 2002 thought I would start up collecting again. The reason was beacuse I have alwase felt that my collecting would lead me somewhere as silly as it sounds. But I began with ebay where I bought my first G1 since chiledhood all thoese are gone now. I bought likity split, heartthrob, and baby hearts n' dots. From there more and more came my way. At this time I was with someone that ignored me for houures on end playing games all day all night. So ponies where my company and to keep my mind on something. Long story short a few large events happened in my like one of them being pony related and turned my world upside down. I gained an understanding of people and moved on with my life. It was a contrubuite to the path I am on now. And now I am moved out, working, with someone that really cares for me and dose things with me. The thing that makes my collection stand out to me now that I told you how I came to collect is that I was a 80s chiled eventho I was born in 1991 we had mlp and watched all kinds of 80s cartoons. So they remind me of my family back way back when. They remind me of the times when it was inasint and bright. So eventho everyone around me was sad I could still find a brightness and happiness in mlp. I didn't have much mlp at a time but loves the 3 G2 that I had. And daydreamed of thair midevil castle and land. Then as I tried to gain G1 only managed a plush blossom. Mom didn't liked used stuff so no brushables for me unless they where new. Then as G3 came out I went nuts I had 40 ish and playsets. But now I only wish to own G1. And I have I belive 90 some in my collection. It only took me a year to gain that many. I haven't gotten as much this year. But that's ok I am almost done collecting. Thanks for reading my long post. If I have misspelled its beacuse I am useing my phone.

My G2 ponies are my childhood. Back in the day I dreamed of owning them all and now, I'm proud of my collection. I remember where I got each pony from so they come with a story of a seller, or a trader that I dealt with - some of those are very happy memories of how I made friends and some of those are bad experiences, buts till very valuable.

My G1's are special in their own, different way. There are my childhood girls like Baby Count-a-lot and Chatterbox, swap presents like my Tropical girls or Wind Whistler, great customs like reverse baby Gusty, NBBE Baby Lofty, Silly Scoops... My current obsession of neon Tropical girls like the babies and Sundazzle girls which bring more color and happiness. Then there is Sunburst I bought from a wonderful collector that I always had wanted and of course my army of Confetti's. Those girls are even more special - I fell in love with Confetti at random, without planing it, without even noticing. Her variants are beautiful and fun and each one of her, either an US or an UK version is different from one another, which makes each one of them precious.

All of my G3's are presents - either from swaps or friends or family members, so they stick with me for Sentimental reasons.

The least special ones are my G4's - some of them are presents and I hold them dearly, but most of them I bought on my own and wouldn't be even very sad to let them go... But I do like the fact they don't take up a lot of space and that they're cute

My collection is special to me because it's a passion/hobby that I share with my husband. It's just one of many ways that we bond. Although this started up as a G4 collection, I'm proud to say that we have ponies from all 5 generations and that in less than 8 months we have amassed 200+ ponies mostly consisting of G1 and G4 :)

Starting to collect ponies, my favourite childhood toys, was a way to prevent me from growing up entirely when I left college and had to start work, which scared the life out of me! Now, they are an escape as they retain that magic-feel that they always had when I was a kid. If I'm feeling down I can go to the pony room and just be there and the ponies help me to feel better. They bring order to my chaos; I suffer with anxiety and maintaining a collection where I keep them in a certain order and fill in the gaps in sets with the ponies I don't yet have provides a form of stability for an otherwise extremely chaotic mind.

Hmmmm...I will admit I am never quite certain why I started collecting. Something one day sent me looking for my childhood ponies and when I was unable to find them, I decided to use the internet to track down replacements. And that's how it all started :)

As for why my collection is special, it makes me happy :) The world can be big and bad and sometimes so its nice to simply be able to retreat to a fun community, which has brought me some lovely friends, the thrill of learning & hunting down items to collect and of course a lovely collection which I enjoy.
Thank you Matcha for my gorgeous Baby Fifi avi

Just to warn ya.. this is gonna be REALLY sappy...
So any how.. I got my first two ponies when i was a kid as a gift from my mom and my grandma when i had to go into the hospital.
They got me glory and sunbeam to keep me company.
i still have both of those lovely ladies... tho they are missing most of their cutie marks and sun has some age spots

I wouldn't trade them for the world.
My grams had a collection she'd let me play with at her home.. and eventually gave them to me, which caused a great deal of angst that
I didn't understand as a kid.
I've had a lot of things go on in my life and a lot of them haven't been positive.
Even now, tho its been a year, I'm still desperately trying to get over loosing my mom.
My ponies mean something and are special to me because they make me happy, and they are a connection to my innocence.

My collection is special because it makes me happy.  I have been continually collecting since G3 came out when I was little, and they have always just made me really, really happy.  I still have all of my childhood G3 girls, and I collected G3.5 as it came out, and now I have a fairly sizable G4 collection.  The G3s are still what my collection mostly consists of, but in the last few months I started to collect G1 and now I have nine beautiful G1 girls in my collection, and I totally love them.

I'm going through a very stressful time right now.  I'm applying to college, and getting ready to graduate from my high school.  Honestly, I don't feel like I am ready to leave home, or even graduate, and I'm kind of struggling with this even though I'm pretty sure I'm taking a year off.  My collection is helping me deal with this stress.  Tracking down new ponies, giving some rather ragged ponies some TLC, or just brushing their manes really helps me to chill out and stop stressing.
