How much would you pay? Painted Rainbow Dash box
« on: July 28, 2013, 02:19:27 PM »
I made this and would like to sell it at Otakon, a major anime convention that's in a few weeks:

I've sold hand painted boxes in the past, and I've asked about this one here maybe a year ago, but I'm just curious what other people think seems like a reasonable price for something like this.

The last handpainted box I sold was a princess celestia box and it sold for $25 plus shipping (that was ebay though), I don't know to tell ya. I think it comes down to supplies, effort and time spent on it. What do you feel is a fair price?

That's actually a pretty cute box! I would say probably around 10 dollars? If need be you can raise the price depending on how much time you spend making them and the cost of painting supplies.

To solve the display problem, maybe you can display it closed (so people see the rainbow dash logo) and then have the picture of the inside/outside sitting next to it so people know that it also looks cool on the inside.

You could maybe try putting it out on the table for $35 and if nobody bites after two days drop it down to $20 on the last day (unless you think that after the cost of the box and the paint you'd be losing money at that point.  I'm not going to pretend to know how much the raw materials for this cost)

Or barring that, put it out at the price point you have in mind, and if it doesn't sell in two days, you might want to think about dropping it down on the last day to move it if it hasn't gone by then.

^^This!^^

Remember, at a convention your prices aren't set in stone.  I've worked at conventions, before, where the prices on certain items were dropped just a bit each day.  Gauge interest and don't be afraid to negotiate if someone makes you a reasonable offer.  Also, haggling can be very fun at a convention!  Personally, I think you'd be okay to start somewhere between $20-$30, due to detail you put into the lightning bolt "gem".

Thanks, but it's not Artist's Alley, but the Art Show. I apologize for not being clear. The Art Show a silent auction where you just put a few individual pieces on display and collect your unsold pieces at the end. So, potentially I *could* lower the price at some point if no one's bidding, but that would be odd. Plus, it pretty much ends Saturday night, and Sunday is when everything is picked up.

I do appreciate your suggestions though. I've decided for display, I can put a small mirror behind it and keep it open...so RD's symbol will be upside down in the mirror, but I've tried just printing out pictures of the insides in the past, and that didn't go over so well, and the mirror display looks reasonably OK I think.

For price, I was considering starting at $20 and probably still will. In the past, and now, I've had people say they would pay $10, but because it's entirely hand painted and not a decal, I just can't justify selling it for that. I worry though that for a silent auction, that's not really a low enough start or that if people would only pay $10, then a hand painted box is just not something people would want, at least not from me.

I made some little boxes like this as well and I charged $10 a piece so that would be a good starting range

Here are mine that I sold:

It's adorable!  I think the price would depend on the box's size (and functionality) as well as the audience.  It looks like you've done a great job painting it, so the quality is there.  As long as it's big enough to be useful and your audience is pony-friendly, I think you can charge at least $20.
