I poked around on eBay for vintage (70's/80's) wooden blocks, and found a set made by Playskool with the same typeset. The box has a copyright date of 1978, but it's likely that the same exact blocks were produced for several years since wooden letter blocks are a pretty standard baby toy. Playskool was acquired by Hasbro in 1984. The Nursery came out in 1985. If Hasbro owned the rights to the Playskool block design, it would make sense that they reused the basic wooden design & painted them with pastel colors for a distinct look to go with MLP.I don't think that the primary colored blocks aren't original MLP, even if they are the same design as it would not be the first time that Hasbro reused a mold for a different product line.
