Hair Pin Help! (Adhesive Problems)
« on: September 18, 2013, 06:13:47 AM »
So I've been working on this custom for, what feels like, forever.  I'm almost done with her.  I pretty much need to style her hair.
I have my heart completely set on hair pins with feathers on them.  I got some dress maker's pins, found some small feathers, and assumed my good old standby (E6000) would do the trick....

.... but it's not   When I apply the E6000 to the pin the consistency gets weird and the feather won't stick to it.  I've used this stuff with metals before and not had a problem.

I want to stay away from hot glue, because it gets so goopy, and don't know if super glue will make the feathers weird.  What would you guys suggest I use to affix these feathers to the pins?  I only need a few to hold her 1/2 bun in place.

I'm trying to picture in my head of what you are trying to make....  Have you tried floral tape? Hold pin and feather together and then pull the floral tape over top? (I gets sticky when you pull it.) Then paint the color you want? I don't know if this would work but that is something I would try. ^-^

Is the hair pin painted?  Like, perhaps an enamel or paint?

Could you stab the pin *through* the feather quill, to that it's just below the pin ball at the top?

when I worked with feathers on a different project I actually wound thread around the feather and whatever youre feathering, tie it off, then use a needle to snag the feather barbs and carefully tug them out from the stitching to refluff it. if youre nervous about security reinforce with some tacky glue across the stitches. id apply with a pin since its going on such a small area. if you want to make sure you don't see any of the stitching just take a smaller feather, or some scrap fluff and gently press it over the stitches when the glue is still tacky. you might be able to adapt this technique for a pin.

and putting the pin thru the quill may work, but ive found that it will usually cause the quill to shatter and the thing to break in half eventually if you look at it wrong. it may work but it may also be superdelicate.

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone.

I sort of went with Euluu's advice.  I figured she's not moving much, so I just tucked the feathers into the bun and pinned the hair in place. Even held up against sitting in front of my fan!

She's actually finished now but she has an accessory I've forgotten was sitting on my bookshelf waiting for paint layers completely neglected.  That part should only take me another day or two, though, so I'm almost ready to take pictures of her!
