Childhood Ponies!
« on: July 24, 2013, 02:46:36 PM »
Today my mom sent me a box of my childhood G1 ponies and some of my other childhood items! Pictures are below. Now these ponies need some serious, serious help. They were stored out in a garage for many years and have a mildew/musty smell and are rather dirty with marks, stickiness, ink, and hair issues. Anyone have any good ways to clean them up besides just a magic eraser?  Any ideas how to clean up the so softs?

I've never tried to fix any of my ponies hair, but since these are my childhood ponies I would love to get them in as good of condition as possible. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

For one thing, give them a good scrub inside and out. G1s are pretty easy to disassemble (just pull the head off, maybe run it under some hot water first). They might have mold and gunk, depending. I use an old, cleaned-up toothbrush for scrubbing them. Give their hair a good wash and condition, too, and assess whether it's good enough or if you want to rehair.

This post made me want to cry.  How wonderful to get your childhood ponies! I have dreams where I find mine.  Congratulations and good luck with cleaning them up!  When I got some especially dirty So Softs, I found a person here on the Arena who offered to clean them for me.  It was great! I don't remember who it was though.

It's great you found your childhood friends.  Lots of warm soapy water and a good toothbrush or pipe cleaner should bring them up fairly well.  I usually just condition their hair and that seems to take out most tangles :)

Thanks everyone. I retried the magic eraser on a few last night and it worked wonders!

I actually dug through my parents entire garage while I was home on vacation to find my ponies... I think I may be missing a few still but I was so excited to find them. Of course, they were in the last box, on the floor, in the corner. Typical. I'm going to work on cleaning them up over the next couple weeks and I'll post some more pics :)

The so-softs really concern me since they are rather dirty... but we'll see what happens!

congrats on your wonderful childhoods! Glad you got them again :)

I usually begin the cleaning with warm water and soap and a good sponge. For the hairs i use a nice conditioner and a hair straightner, but you NEED to wet the ponies hair when using the straightener, otherwise it will melt...

Omg, so awesome to get your childhood ponies back!! And wow, you have a Lil' Tot!! O.O

I'm sure they will look very beautiful once they are all cleaned up. I don't have much advice for the So-softs, you have to be careful with those buggars. I have cleaned some with just hand soap and gentle rubbing with my fingers, but even with just that small bits of the flocking tends to come off.

your ponies look in remarkably good condition for garage stored ponies! And you have a nice collection. It does not look like any need rehairing. i would just give them spa treatment (good scrub inside and outside with a soapy toothbrush, and condition and straighten their manes and tails.

Oh I do LOVE a box of G1s to clean up - its such a treat to see them come nice again :)

That is so great you found your old ponies.  Congrats.  Be careful with those so softs, hot water can take the flocking off, so start off cold to luke warm.

for the keypers I would just use some dawn soap , that seems to work , but I have no idea what a magic eraser would do.
