Scrapple!
« on: October 12, 2013, 11:27:10 PM »
Who likes it?  Who loves it? Who has no idea what scrapple is?

I couldn't resist picking some up while grocery shopping yesterday.  Right now, I'm cooking a big 'ole piece of it (at least two servings, lol).  Knowing what it's made out of, I'm surprised I can eat it.  I think I like scrapple more than I like bacon :)

My husband loves that stuff.  He made me try it and I thought it was so disgusting. LOL

I had never tried scrapple until a few years ago.

Growing up, my dad loved this stuff.  When I was very young, I asked him what it was.  He told me "all the bad parts of a pig."

o_O

After learning that I had never tried it, a friend told me I must try it before passing judgement.  I took a small bite and was hooked.

So, what's in it?

Offal - in this case, pig offal: head, heart, liver, etc.  All the lovely bits!  The organ meat is boiled to make a broth.

The broth is then mixed with cornmeal and various seasonings.  Any meat is chopped up and mixed back into the cornmeal/offal mush.  It's then formed into loaves, sliced, and cooked.

Mmmmm! Right?

I grabbed the packaging out of the fridge and it reads: pork and beef stock, pork, wheat flour, beef, cornmeal, pork hearts (awww <3), salt, flavorings, autolyzed (huh?) yeast extract.

LoL, my mom copied a recipe for vegetarian scrapple from a TV show.  They claim it "tastes like real scrapple!"  I have yet to try it, but I may be a convert if I ever get around to using the recipe.

Yum! Scrapple. I love it and now I'm going to have to get some. It's been a long time. My mom and I like it but the rest of my family think it's revolting. Of course, they eat stuff I think is revolting, so I guess it evens out.

I've never heard of it....But I really don't like pork much at all (no not even bacon), so that just sounds revolting and I don't think I'll be trying it. Glad you guys found something to like though!

Ah, scrapple. That was one of my favorite episodes of Dirty Jobs.
