Pony Corral / Re: Show me pony mugs!
« on: May 14, 2015, 01:32:56 PM »
I love coffee, so I especially love pony coffee mugs! Here's my little collection.

visitors can't see pics , please register or login

Sorry for the terrible picture quality. On the top row is the 2013 Fair mug, a NJ Pony Meet cup that was a gift from KarRedRoses back in the day , and an officially licensed retro style mug. I designed the two mugs on the bottom row myself. It's hard to tell from the pic but they have collages of G1 symbols on them.

Even though I'm running out of room in my cupboard, I really hope the Fair does another mug for 2015!

Pony Corral / Re: G3 Birthflower Ponies - What can you tell me?

I remember that pink January Carnation "prototype" from back in the day! I was a little disappointed that she turned out to be white in the stores, but that wasn't nearly as disappointing as the fact that I never found her in the stores at all. Distribution was so spotty for these lovely girls. :(

At the time of the birthflowers' release, there were only four TRUs left in my entire state, and I only found the July-August-September assortment in one of them. I was lucky enough to get the April-May-June set while on vacation in Los Angeles. (Finding that TRU was an adventure... Let's just say that GPS technology has come a long way! :P Worth it though!) I resorted to eBay to get Oct-Nov-Dec, and I did some trades to get February Violet and March Daffodil. I still don't have January Carnation! :(

I think she's gorgeous! My second favorite in the set after Starglow.

Nice haul! :)

The middle one in the first picture is Royalette. She was a Target exclusive and came with a vanity and a bunch of accessories. The third one is Flutterbutter, who was part of a Toys R Us exclusive four-pack.

In the second picture, the purple one is Twinkle Hope. She was specially made to support the Give Kids The World charity.

The G3 in the third picture is Pretty Pop, and yes, her barrette is original. :) She should (theoretically) smell like bubblegum.

Price Check Archives / Re: Price Check

I feel like you've already asked this question...? Did you mean to ask about a different pony? If you just want more opinions on Starswirl's value, you can bump up your other post instead of making a new one. :) If you lost track of your post, I think the consensus was that she's currently sitting at $25-35.

It's hard for me to get an impression of where on that price spectrum your particular Starswirl might lie. It can't hurt to put her up for sale at $35 (or whatever you want) and see if there are any takers, and if not, adjust accordingly. Honestly, she does look like she's in excellent shape overall, but her hair is a mess in the pictures. That makes it hard for me to accurately assess the full quality of her hair pinkness and stripe paint, which are the two aspects most likely to show wear and hence effect her value. So if I were buying her as-is, I would be more comfortable with a $25 price tag than $35. Someone else might feel differently. Maybe it's worth it to you to take five minutes to brush her hair and take more pictures to try to get an extra $10, maybe it's not.

Please understand, I'm not saying that to be harsh. ^^; To me, terms like "Near Mint" are so vague that they're almost meaningless. Everyone has slightly different views on how ponies should be evaluated. In the past, I've received supposedly "NM" ponies with haircuts, pen marks, paint scuffs, etc. and been really disappointed. I've also received "custom bait" ponies that just needed a bath and a brush and been disappointed in a completely different way! So now I much prefer going by detailed descriptions or thorough pictures to make up my own mind about how mint a pony is. And like I said, someone else might feel differently and be willing to pay more with less rock-solid certainty of what they're getting, but I have to watch my spending. :)

Pony Corral / Re: New Nurse Redheart Brushable

Aww, I like her! Since she's supposed to have her hair up in a bun, I can imagine working the ribbon into that, or using it as a kind of snood-esque wrap thing.

I think I'm very much in the minority, since I kinda like the ribbon hair gimmick. But I think it definitely works on certain ponies better than others. Rarity and Pinkie Pie pull it off well, in my opinion, while poor Rainbow Dash could have been soooooo much better.

I've recently realized I have a lot of thoughts about how Brushables Could Be Better, but since I don't actually buy G4s, my opinion isn't worth much!

I wouldn't say no to either of them, but I especially love the duckie version!

The bunny symbol version is cute too, but I think the Dutch Rabbit baby pony "wore it better." ^.^

I've never tried to re-dye Dabble's hair (since that would require a Dabble! lol) but I recently used Rit's "Aquamarine" in a different project, and it's pretty close color-wise. I think it's a bit too blue, but if you mixed it with a little green dye, it might work for you.

Another option is the "Bright Aqua" acid dye from Dharma Trading Co., although shipping to New Zealand might be slow and/or expensive. The people at Dharma are incredibly nice and helpful though, so they might be willing to send you a tiny sample for cheaper if you email them.

Pony Corral / Re: Question about Billy shelves
« on: April 24, 2015, 04:41:25 PM »
You're talking about the standard 5-shelf BILLY bookcase? I don't have one at hand to measure, but I'm pretty sure the peg holes are ~3cm apart vertically, not counting the hole-less portion around the middle fixed shelf. Hopefully someone can check theirs and get you the exact measurement.

Although, if I understand your project's goal correctly, have you considered the BESTÃ… bookcase instead? It's similar to the BILLY in volume and price, but it has a middle row of peg holes pre-drilled and matching half-depth shelves you can buy. I applaud your willingness to DIY, I just want to make sure you know you don't have to do it yourself. :bigups:

Hang on a minute. So there are already three different Chinese Singing/Sweet Pockets (fading pink/blue, fading pink/purple and bubblegum pink/purple) and now you tell me there's also a NC one?!

*sound of Taffeta headbutting a wall can be heard...*

*pats you gently* ^^;
If it makes you feel better, I don't think the NC version has any significant differences to the China version. Or at least, no differences from the straight-fading-pink-with-blue-hair "ideal" China version. Certainly not anything like the differences that the China version has with itself! Curly/straight, purple/blue, fading/unfading... Poor Sweet Pocket has a lot of issues with consistency.

She looks so cool like that! If anyone can pull off mismatched hair, it's a Rockin Beat!
I wonder, could there be corresponding Pretty Beats somewhere out there with blue manes and purple tails?  :what:

It's not as neat as yours, but I found out years after I got her that my Sweet Pocket was the Spanish/NC version. I only discovered it because I got another "regular" Sweet Pocket who had purple hair instead of blue and compared the two side by side. 1991 seems to be a pretty lax year in Hasbro's hair color quality control!

My husband dubbed this one Firefly Glowbutt! I think she weirded him out, how she can split in half like a magician's assistant.

The concept was really neat, but the execution was a little... ^^; It was cool to see Hasbro make light-up ponies that were self-contained, unlike Glitter Glide and Loop-de-la. However, she kind of needs a skirt to hide the super-obvious seam between her opaque and translucent halves IMO. Unfortunately, hiding her inner mechanisms behind a skirt also obscures her gimmick, so it doesn't seem like this was the best overall design choice to me. I don't understand why they didn't just make her like a Jewel/Crystal Design pony and position the LED behind a clear symbol instead of making her whole rump light up.

Pony Corral / Re: POTD 4/21/2015 Star Swirl (G4 Version)
« on: April 21, 2015, 05:15:05 PM »
I love how her color scheme is similar to G1 Starswirl and her symbol is similar to G3 Star Swirl. Even if it's just borne of laziness, it makes me happy to see inter-generational nods.

If I collected G4s, she'd be on my want list. I think she'd be lovely as a G1 unicorn!
