Title: Barbie's new bodies
Post by: Taxel on January 28, 2016, 06:49:04 AM
I came across this article (http://time.com/barbie-new-body-cover-story/?xid=newsletter-brief) earlier. What do you guys think?

I'm not sure how I feel about Curvy yet. I don't think the clothing choice shows it off great, especially since the skirt looks like it isn't ironed. Being super short I'm very excited about Petite! I hope they make a redhead with freckles. Tall is pretty cool too but I want to see her compared to a normal Barbie body first.

I really really hope they make articulated versions. Kids are so used to well jointed dolls these days I'm worried they'll fail if they don't. (Plus it would be super awesome to have a poseable diverse cast.) Its a bit early to worry about that though :P

Edit: Dolls and fashion packs are on Mattel's site (http://shop.mattel.com/family/index.jsp?categoryId=3741278&f=PAD%2FBrand%20New%2FBarbie&s=A-ProductAge).

Petite is great! I agree that it's hard to tell with curvy. Her clothing is unflattering.

New dolls with clothing are up on Mattel Shop, I added the link to the first post.

I like Emoji Fun (quite a bit, actually) but the rest of the Curvy and all the Petite just completely fall flat for me. Leather & Ruffles and Boho Fringe of the Tall girls are both pretty cute.

I like them, and I actually especially like "curvy". I agree that the fashion choice isn't great, but she just looks so much more realistic. When you put the two next to each other, the original barbie really looks like an alien.

I really like them! I would love a curvy and tall one, myself. :P But really, this is great to see a doll line branching out and including different body types, plus all of the skin colors are beautiful. Barbie was a huge part of my childhood and this may just get me into buying them!

I don't like curvy outfit iether and think they need real names. Makes me feel uncomfortable calling them by body type. But love petite, she's a doll!

I love that a huge brand like Barbie is branching out into different body types, but I wonder if labeling them doesn't defeat the purpose?

What a great idea! I'd love to buy one of each, with different hairstyles/skin tones etc, and make a proper group of friends out of them! Much more realistic!!

While I definitely hope we get some articulated ones because even tho I don't collect Barbie some of my hybrids could use body upgrades, its important there are stiff armed dolls for the younger kids too.

The blue haired one reminds me of Stormer from the new Jem comic.

I just need to know how petite, Petite is. I have my reasons....all of which are related to a teeny multicoloured haired zombie Equestria Girl. I also want to try some of the Tall outfits on my LittleBig Goo...you know, for science and stuff.

There's more photos of the dolls here (http://www.barbie.com/en-us), including all the body types together and a lot of currently/soon-to-be released dolls. The curvy body looks really good in the better fashions! I really love this one (http://shop.mattel.com/product/index.jsp?productId=87362696).

People are going nuts on the Barbie FB page. Its crazy.

I've seen some pretty nasty comments on Facebook about the curvy girl. Man can people not be happy.

I was gonna purchase the blue haired curvy girl from mattel's shop but the shipping is almost as much as another doll. I can't stand there shipping.

I LOVE the short hair!  And ohhhhh they are all so adorable.  Oh dear....  I really do not want to fall into the world of 1:6 dolls like this!

I'm actually quite pleased with Mattel's decision on this. Not so much because it shuts people up a bit when it comes to Barbie's ridiculous body (people will always find reasons to complain even after this happening), but because you have a choice now - and I like that.

I haven't bought a Barbie doll in ages, but I think I might buy a blonde curvy one (http://shop.mattel.com/product/index.jsp?productId=87362656), simply because I love how adorable they look.

I'm getting excited.... if the Curvy Barbie fashions might fit my old classic childhood Barbies - they have re-done her body so many times that new Barbie clothing doesn't fit on my old dolls.

I love seeing more options in any doll line, so I love seeing some taller, shorter, chubbier versions (love blue hair on a couple of them too).

Although like people have said, it's too bad they're not more articulated (I always think that about the Fashionista line too).

I am so absolutely over-the-moon excited over these!
I've wanted to have dolls that looked like me ever since I was a kid, and it's so amazing that girls with different body types will now—finally—be represented on the doll aisle!
This is such a huge step forward.  I feel like this is toy history that we're witnessing! :D

I'm already planning on buying Doll 26 "Spring Into Style" (http://shop.mattel.com/product/index.jsp?productId=87362696) to turn into a mini me.

I have seen them, and I don't like it at all, it's just a way to force people to buy even more clothes, because 'one fits all' doesn't apply any more. What's the point if you cannot use your old clothes any more??? As a child, it would make me furious to get a Barbie who cannot wear my clothes.
The skin tones I like, but I think we had that before already.

I'm glad they're finally becoming a bit more responsible about the body types they give young girls to look up to.  I don't particularly like the new ones, but I've never been into dolls.  I was chatting with my mum about it the other day and she said she's always found it strange to give little girls mature-bodied dolls.  She remembers having dolls with pre-pubescent bodies, which makes sense really, since most kids (aside from collectors) tend to move on from barbies around puberty.  It seems like it's making kids aware of body issues too early.

I think it's great they have a curvy doll now, but it doesn't particularly appeal to me personally.  If I were going to buy a doll it would be something more artistic and less body-real, like monster high or something where the dolls are more a work of art and not supposed to look like real women.

It's without a doubt a great step and I look forward to the possibility of other dolls having to do the same to keep up, and/or Mattel expanding diversity further. I'd love a doll in my body shape, and I'm absolutely sure I'm not alone there!  :)

As for personal opinion on the aesthetics.....definitely a LOT more interesting to look at, though still not very in my opinion due to the extremely similar face molds. I do think a lot of the fashions are cute though, and I really like that they decided to give so many colored hair as a reflection of real-life current fashion! I think that'll be really fun to look back on in the future if the trend dies out rather than increasing.

I think the new bodies and skin colors are important tho I don't believe that dolls alone cause body image issues. Peer pressure is a much stronger cause. But these dolls will help normalize these things so that when they are older they are more accepting of differences. And really that's the most important benefit.

I kind of like them but really none I think would fit my body type XD

Sad thing is when I think Petite I don't think height.. I think about build.. like I'm considered Petite in build but not in height XD

I think that's why they're continuing to offer the "regular" sized dolls.  These new sizes seem to be "in addition to" but not replacing the old body type.  That way you can still get new dolls who fit all of your old clothing, and new clothing for older dolls.

For me this isn't any different than dolls like Monster High, who come in multiple sizes and whose clothing doesn't fit every single other MH doll.

I'd love a doll in my body shape, and I'm absolutely sure I'm not alone there!  :)

You are definitely not alone there! :D

I could not agree more.
I don't think that Barbie ever caused body image issues (not in most people anyway); but she didn't represent diversity in body type either.  I think that was always the bigger issue to be honest: Representation for more than one type of girl.

Barbie has never been a favorite for me even as a girl unless she had cool accessories because I hated dressing/redressing my Barbies.  I have all of my childhood ones (even though I seriously wish I had kept the playsets) and Barbie really has changed over the years!  I used to collect Barbie trading cards that showed them from the 50s through the 90s which was pretty cool.  I rarely stop to look at modern Barbie but now I am actually kind of tempted by these new body types!  I say, good job Mattel, it's about time!  I really like the shaved headed Tall and blue-haired Curvy.  I won't be buying any though unless they come to brick and mortar stores and are just irresistible.

i'm hopeful that they will release articulated versions of these eventually. i try to only buy jointed dolls, so if they don't, these dolls will not be joining my home. too bad too.
anyone have them in their hands yet. i love to see the bodies compared.

 I always think of petite in height because that's the only section of clothing where I can find pants that aren't too long for me!(I'm only 5 feet tall)

I definitely like these, but none fit my body type exactly either. I would consider myself petite in height, but more on the curvy side in build. But hey, it's a start!

I am THRILLED about the new curvy Barbies!  I've wanted a larger sized Barbie for years.  I've ordered the blond haired and blue haired ones and will probably get the other ones when they come out.  I actually really like the outfit of the blue haired one, especially the top.  I've been working on making some clothes/clothes patterns for them and made this ladybug-inspired outfit last night:

Are these going to be sold in stores with the rest of the regular Barbie? I didn't know if it's going to be like an online only, small production thing. I would be happy to see them in the store so girls can have a choice on what size/height Barbie they want :) And hopefully they'll sell well!

For now it is Mattel shop exclusive. They are working with the stores to find shelf space for them. I hope they can make space for them.

I think her body shape is nice - but it's what I would describe as "normal." I think it's pretty sad that this doll is being referred to as the "fat" doll (as I have seen in many places) when she's anything but.

I know.  She doesn't look fat at all.  And calling her obese is just ridiculous.

Agreed.
Barbie's original body never accurately represented the female form.  Even slender women do not look like Barbie; and women who have attempted to have had to undergo some pretty serious body-altering measures, such as surgeries and unnatural dieting, in order to achieve the look.  So it's absolutely ludicrous to call a doll that more accurately represents an average build "fat".

And I want to straight-up slap the folks who have referred to her as obese.  You have to have a certain BMI to be considered obese.  You're not obese as soon as you go ten or twenty pounds overweight.  For cryin' out loud.

Now I am very disappointed.... she has such a TINY bust!  Like an A-B cup.... I was thinking more of a C to E kind of size.... uhhhh you know, like me?  I'm quite CURVY - I certainly do NOT have a B-cup...  Clothing definitely won't cross generations if they refuse to increase her bust size.  :(    Such irony, you know?  They created more body types to be more realistic but the doll that SHOULD have more breasts.... doesn't.  :(    Back to my original Classic Barbies, who actually look like my body type... aside from the few proportion issues that all Barbies have.

I LOVE the petite, that's my body type! I am a bit sad there's not a redhead in there, but by means of a headswap I can get my mini-me... Now, the question is, can they do this with Ken too? I'd love to see chubby Ken, little Ken, tall lanky Ken... <3

There was an article published shortly after the news of Barbie's new body broke that featured digitally-altered Ken dolls with different body types.  Some of them looked really awesome.
I agree with you, I'd love for Ken to get some body-diversity as well.  I've never really cared for the ripped six-pack look.  It'd be nice to have some Ken dolls with a cute little beer belly instead. :P  I know, wishful thinking. lol

Okay, it's not Ken, but it's still pretty darn cool.
Lammily has started a new funding campaign to produce a realistically-proportioned boy doll, and I gotta say, I really like how he looks.  With a custom face-up, he could be quite the handsome fella.

Maybe this will inspire Mattel to give Ken a makeover. :)

I've been interested in these different barbie doll sizes! I love the tall and petite, I'm not a fan of the original one and I think the the curvy ones are ugly. Especially the petite, its my body size and its nice to see smaller dolls, as barbie used to make me feel bad for being skinny and short. The curvy ones look so weird, they almost look pregnant with the hideous dress designs. My husband said the blue hair one looks like a fat version of katry Perry xD
