Title: OH my, facebook
Post by: mlp4me on November 25, 2015, 12:55:17 PM
No, facebook, no. I do not want you to know my real name. Who else has received the verify who you are, now you're locked out message?

Like many others I have a FB page just for pony stuff. I'm Mlp Forme. So, now I have to prove to them who I am. I get it. I do, but I don't want to have my pony stuff associated with my regular account.
Who wants to help me cheat the system? I need a fake library card... lol

I got it a few months ago.  Even though it has a lot of my art stuff (two stores and commissions are advertised there) I didn't go through the verification.  It really feels like phishing to me even if it is real.  What kind of social media site asks for a driver's license and social security card (US).  I read that some people complied and still weren't let back in.

this is one reason why I refuse to touch facebook with a 50 foot poll.

Did you know that they stole my mothers information and used it on zoosk?  She had to get my dad to threaten them to cease and she still gets random letters (which were computer generated, probably from stolen information from males that are her age).

Do you have any pictures of you on there?  take them down or those will get stolen too.  There was a huge thing on it last year.

Not that I feel that it is right for them to ask for a driver's license or ssn.. But I thought there had always been a rule that you couldn't use a false name on FB? I assume they are cracking down on that.

(edit for my phone typos...)

^This.  It's to do with accountability.

They are increasingly held responsible for what people post, so if it causes a problem they want to be able to get hold of people and report them to the police etc.

It's the thin end of the wedge that will become the Internet of Things, with Big Data Analysis, cloud storage and then eventually, clones will rule the earth.

I've had two pony collector friends have the same thing happen to them recently. I just have my one FB account with my real name, though. I just try to keep as much pony stuff off it as possible, which is not as fun. :/

Yeah, it's always been a rule that you had to use your real name...it's in the TOS that nobody ever reads.  They've just started cracking down on it.  I use my real name, so it's no biggie for me - I use my personal FB for my direct sales business, so it needs to have my name, but I also post dolls and ponies and baby pics and daily life.  I figure, it's MY Facebook page...if people don't want to see my stuff, they can stop looking, lol.

And I've never had to give FB my SSN, that's just weird.

I've always had my real name on mine, but it's set to private and I only accept people that I know.  I have a dummy account that I used to use to get free coins on a couple of games, lol.  I wonder if they've requested the real name on that one?  It's registered to one of my dolls lol.  But I hardly every go on there, so it may have avoided detection lol
Title: Re: OH my, facebook
Post by: thesugarpuppie on November 25, 2015, 03:43:32 PM
I've been on facebook for years and unless it was recently updated and I missed it (I do my best to make time to read the TOS on sites I use), a real name wasn't strictly required, but probably encouraged.  You just had to have a student e-mail when they first started.   So I used my initials.  On my visible accounts (pages associates with my main account which was private and for IRL friends and family) I used part of my real name which was derived from my initials which I sometimes sign my art with and alternate with Gothic Sugar.

My block happened as I was removing personal photos and working on my brands (art &fashion related).  I don't know if that triggered anything or not.  If I were to go back under my main (I have a dummy like ZennaBug for the same reason that I never use), it would only be after registering my name as a business entity and using that info.

I'll see what I can do, it's just a bummer to be locked out. I use it for storing images as well as pony stuff. There's no images of me at all on it. They're a bit insane to request a SSN or drivers license. I can totally do mail and something like a library card, lol. I just wish my mac had photoshop (cause editing things in photo bucket isn't fun)... Oh, my gosh I sound like such a criminal right now...

Wait... they're asking for SSNs and driver's license info? I've never heard that.

I've had Facebook for about 8 years now, never had a problem because I use my real name and I only add people I know. My statuses are rarely ever set to public (meaning anyone can see them) and I do have pictures of myself on there, but it's never been an issue (identity theft or anything) so I guess I kinda don't understand the worry/paranoia? I've always posted all sorts of things about my life on there, although I post more of my collections and pet photos on Instagram these days. In any case, it hasn't been a problem at all.

Though, if they're asking for super personal information, I can see not wanting to hand any of that over.

edit: Oh, I did have a dummy account once when I used to play a ton of games on Facebook. I haven't been on it in years, so I wonder if they locked it?

Since so many of my friends are from the arena, a lot of them are going through this. Most of them are having issues with the accounts they used for their customs. I have one registered to my doll too Zen for back when I played the games! LOL I haven't been there in ages..... Now I wonder if it's got a note....

Several people I know just use their real first name then a fake middle and last name, usually something foreign. One guy has a name using only Japanese characters. I think they use that as their main account, though.

I really wish they'd let you organize friends into groups and make settings so that certain groups can't see certain posts. It would make things a lot easier if you're around very different kinds of people.

Wait, they are actually asking for SSN or a license?  There is no way I would send that information to anyone who isn't my insurance agent or employer.

I just went to check and my dummy account is still active.  I think that it's so inactive that it has escaped notice lol.  If they shut it down, I'll live.

Yup, they really do.
I went back to check and they say the card itself, not the number for Social Security.

I'm stuck as of now because photo bucket is doing its usual.. I make an edit, save that edit. Then I go to add on another layer, it saves it but then messes up the layers=absolute disaster. If anyone has photo editing software and can lend me a hand on this I would greatly appreciate it. I have customs images on this account that I don't own anymore and don't have the images stored anywhere else...

Oh! I remember when a singer I follow on Instagram posted that she's been blocked from her FB account as they said her name wasn't real (which it was). She was lucky enough to be famous so they unlocked her account the very next day. I think a couple of her thousands of fans wrote complaints along with her. They've not requested this in Sweden, but I think we give out our social security number when we sign up..

My issue is the confidentiality.. I thought mine was high and locked for outsiders and then a person I really don't like commented on pictures that was friends only and suddenly knew my boyfriends name.. I had to watch a youtube video on how to really make it closed for people who aren't on my friends list. But now, the only thing showing is my picture.

This is really hitting the transgender community hard :( It's the reason I haven't changed my name on Facebook. I use the nickname feature for BlackCurtains when pony people and whoever else want to find me, but my page is under my birth name. It's... irritating, to say the least.

It actually IS phishing. It's just being done by a major website. If you read the terms when you sign up for the site, you agree that Facebook is allowed to do a lot of very sketchy things (For instance, they own and can [and will] sell pictures that you post on there).

If anyone needs fake library cards, I can get some for you, actually. Just say the word.

Its really inconvenient, it's not happened to me personally, but I admin the "My Little Pony items + loads of other 80's toys I keep finding" group and many of our members have been affected by this.  Some have been in the middle of settling transactions when their account has been blocked which leads to all kinds of upsets.  For one, it looks like they have blocked admin which is a big no no.  Then it looks like they've blocked the seller/buyer so it has all the smells of scamming someone.  Fortunately in most cases they do manage to get back in touch - either through a partners FB account or via other methods (I do try and message through the Arena if they are also on here) but still, a MAJOR headache

Apparently they are working on that.  But as you can have documents that count under your real name rather than your birth name as a transgender person, you can register like that.  You just have to have your real name be official in some way.

I would take this option rather than having two accounts.  I recently looked into it extensively for a not-for-profit organisation.  It's a good option.

Thanks for the offer Zenna. I really appreciate it. I was able to get a supportive online friend to edit info on a card for me. If I get a request for another document I may send a utility bill your way, lol. I at least was able to get in and save all my customs images that I have there (which is my biggest concern, I don't back-up stuff on the computer, but I guess I will from now on). I use my real name but lately I have been getting a lot of "friend" requests from people that are supposedly in Pakistan/India/Middle East. They don't even look like real accounts and all of them claim to be students at the University of Alaska at Fairbanks. Sorry, request denied. There are quite a few Indians in the graduate programs for Engineering and Computer Science but none of the accounts even look real - no pictures, no friends, no cover photos..

This exactly. Facebook doesn't care about peoples' safety at ALL. NO type of personal information is their business. They are not a government agency or an employer (to most users). I mean, I'm trying to get my own JOB to take my photo off the website because of safety concerns -- I shouldn't have to fight Facebook over my personal information, too!

Most of the information about me that is available for stalkers to find online is there because I had a Facebook account under my real name long ago. Facebook has NO scruples when it comes to selling information -- of any kind -- to third parties. I already hated Facebook with a passion, but this whole mess makes it so much worse.

EDIT: Idea: let's all migrate back to myspace! :silly:

You can do that with your posts (pick which groups you want to see) - but there is nothing you can do about whether or not your friends see the comments/likes you make on other people's pages, unless they turn that off (which I did).

I think they are doing the "prove you are you" thing now because of online bullying/fraud issues.

It's also frustrating if you have a friend that you only know by the name they use, but it's not their birth name. For instance, I have a friend who is Chinese and her birth name is rather complicated and hard to spell, so she goes by an American name (she's also trans, so that could complicate the situation even more!). If Facebook requires her to use her birth name, how is anyone going to know it's her; how will people find her? It's ridiculous.

No, I don't think so.  I think they're just slowing going through all the accounts and if the name looks fake they're contacting you.  If you have a fake name like Alice Smith just as an example, they'd probably leave you alone.  All the fake names I've seen who have had to change have been things like Mlp Forme, Mustbe Jewell, Pixi Dixi, Mylittlepony FanWorld.  All very obvious fake names.

It's also been very slow.  The first person on my list who had to change their name it happened to at least a year ago.  There are a lot of accounts they check.  And now that you've been noticed, they are going to check what you do very closely.  So I am not sure Photoshopping anything will count.  Facebook aren't dumb.

They only thing I would suggest is start a new account with a normal sounding fake name attached to an email that you haven't used.  She how that goes.

I had no family members on my account at all. Oh well, I was too obvious, LOL. Come on that name was French!! I've caved and the regular account is getting pony peeps added in. I'm going to go a bit crazy for awhile (not knowing who anyone is on the arena that I've added), but it'll be OK. (Like I do not think I will add in 200 more friends on top of the already existing real life friends/familiy on there.)
Sooooooooo if in fact you want to be my friend and are not a spambot droid out to eat my cheese (I've already added in people that I could remember some may be you already!) you are more than welcome to pm me and I'll send you my FB info. Smiles all around.

Sorry, I was more or less talking specifically about family members of transfolks.

But yes, anyone can report your profile for a number of things. When you go to the [...] button on the upper right hand side and click 'report' it gives you these choices-

What's wrong with this account?
This person is annoying
This timeline is pretending to be me or someone I know
This timeline is full of inappropriate content
This is a fake account
This profile represents a business or organization
This timeline is using a fake name
This profile is underage and should not be on Facebook

And it doesn't have to be someone even on your friends list. The option of reporting is public.

I've read this has also been an issue for Native American/First Nations people who's real names include colors or animal names and FB's algorithms pick them up as fake. My understanding is that FB does have some kind of software for identifying potentially fake names, so it's probably a mix of that and others reporting accounts.

Facebook just shouldn't be doing this. People should be allowed to call themselves whatever they want. This whole situation sounds like Facebook is trying to collect all the personal information that they can so that when they take over the world and make us all their Matrix-like slaves they have what they need for their evil plot.

Of course, I'm semi-serious (I'm all serious on the privacy invasion issue) but no one ever listens to me...
